Divinity Will Have Better Character Creation Than BG3, Developer Says

By newsgame

Divinity developer Larian Studios has claimed that the character creation system in the upcoming role-playing game will be even better than the one previously featured in Baldur’s Gate 3. Given the overwhelmingly positive response to Baldur’s Gate 3, expectations for Divinity are sky-high, and Larian is pulling out all the stops to ensure that it lives up to what gamers are hoping for.

Baldur’s Gate 3‘s character creation was a particular high point for the game. With tons of depth, players could create just about any character they wanted for their playthrough. It was almost a running joke among the community that players would spend hours in character creation before ever actually playing the game. Gamers used this to their advantage, often getting creative to bring characters from other franchises to life in Baldur’s Gate 3 for a themed playthrough. An example is the Baldur’s Gate 3 player who created a build based on God of War‘s Kratos, with many similar cases. Because character creation was so popular in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s only natural that players would be curious to see how Larian is planning to handle it in Divinity.

Divinity To Feature ‘More Colors, More Options, More Control’ For Character Creation

Speaking in a Reddit AMA about Divinity, Art Director Alena Dubrovina was asked whether the game will feature full character customization in the vein of Baldur’s Gate 3. Her response was bold, claiming, “We are planning to have an even better one! More colors, more options, more control!” While it would certainly take something impressive to top Baldur’s Gate 3‘s efforts, it’s great to see that the developer is being ambitious and looking to iterate on what came before. Dubrovina’s answer does still leave a lot up to interpretation – while “more colors” is pretty obvious, “more options” and “more control” could mean many different things, so it remains to be seen how these improvements come to fruition in Divinity.

According to Dubrovina, Larian is looking to the community for inspiration on what players want from character customization. In another comment during the AMA, she mentioned that the developers of the game “love all the mods regarding player appearance,” referring to popular character customization mods for Baldur’s Gate 3, and pointed out that there are “lots of very creative ideas in terms of combining outfits, hairstyles and what not.” She also says that the team is always looking at those, and says,”we take note of what our community wants.” Given that Baldur’s Gate 3 has quickly become one of the most popular games for modding since its release, it makes sense that this would be the best way for Larian to figure out what existing fans want.

Since its announcement at The Game Awards 2025, Larian has already revealed a decent amount of information about Divinity. It sounds as though it’s going to be even more ambitious than Baldur’s Gate 3, which would be a remarkable achievement if it all comes together. And while it’s exciting that Larian is shooting for the stars once again, the game hasn’t been devoid of controversy so far. In the wake of its announcement, Larian said it was using generative AI to aid early development in Divinity, which immediately drew the ire of gamers. This has since been clarified and walked back, including in the most recent AMA, where Larian boss Swen Vincke revealed the studio has decided not to use the technology for concept art, which should go some way to calming gamers’ fears about AI-generated assets ending up in the final release.
