Warframe Devs Detail New Mission Types with The Old Peace
Warframe has continued to grow and evolve as a free-to-play action RPG over the course of 12 years. The game has certainly seen its fair share of ups and downs over its lifespan, from its origins of being unfairly compared to Bungie’s Destiny franchise to establishing a major foothold thanks to word of mouth and a dedicated fanbase. Through all of that, Warframe‘s popularity has continued to climb over the years, thanks in large part to consistent updates and content releases from developer Digital Extremes.
December sees the arrival of its latest major update, known as The Old Peace. Ahead of the launch, we were able to speak with Warframe creative director Rebecca Ford, lead writer Adrian Bott, audio lead Erich Preston, and principal writer Kat Kingsley about The Old Peace update, including the two new mission types: The Perita Rebellion and The Descendia.
How The Old Peace Embraces Trench Warframe
On December 10, Warframe players will get to experience the next big chapter of the game’s Cinematic Quest, allowing Tenno to journey through their repressed memories of the Old War. Alongside Warframe‘s current main questline, which unlocks all sorts of new content from locations, materials, and more, The Old Peace will be adding its own “significant” new additions to the game’s already extensive canon.
Among this new content is The Descendia and The Perita Rebellion. As Ford reveals, these missions “explore the idea of ‘war’ in Warframe” and draw inspiration from the game’s first art director, Michael “Mynki” Brennan, and his Devil Warframe concept. The team was seemingly drawn to the idea of a devil on the battlefield, using the concept of “War is Hell” to hone in on the narrative elements for The Old Peace.
Introducing The Perita Rebellion and The Descendia
The Perita Rebellion is where players will be able to experience the heart of this war, though there is a twist to this game mode. Players will only have 12 minutes to experience these flashbacks due to the intense nature of the operator’s senses “reverberating back” to the past. As Ford indicates,
“It’s really meant to feel like a scene from a World War I action movie that feels narratively significant to the main The Old Peace Quest. Our mission objectives are meant to feel really tactical and militaristic, less video game-y. We are even introducing a new Bayonet weapon type in this update, directly leaning into the WWI era from every angle.”
On the flip side is the game mode known as The Descendia, which has players literally descending a tower, with each floor becoming more difficult the further down they go. Digital Extremes confirms that the tower represents the “hell” that is Roathe’s memory as seen through the Drifter’s mind, intending to be more introspective as compared to the “external hell” that is The Perita Rebellion. Ford is hopeful that these new game modes offer freshness and excitement for both new and veteran players. Of course, there will be new rewards to earn, with Ford even teasing some prominent items like “the Tauron Strike ultimate abilities or the Honoria player titles.”
Connecting The Devil’s Triad to The Descendia
However, rewards and being able to overcome challenges aren’t the only elements to The Descendia. The Devil’s Triad represents a “narrative experiment” for Digital Extremes, which the team has been able to iterate on some story elements of Warframe: 1999 that players really enjoyed. In this case, Bott isn’t calling The Devil’s Triad a mission or quest, but more of a fully-fledged narrative side story that plays out through an evolved version of the K.I.M. System. In addition, Warframe is expanding its romance and relationship system for The Devil’s Triad, with Bott hopeful that players will really feel an emotional connection with Wisp, Harrow, and Uriel as they descend the tower.
“To achieve this, we are expanding our romance & relationship system with these three characters, who are truly unlike anything Warframe has seen past or present. We want players to feel an emotional connection with these three as they delve into The Descendia game mode, but also a connection to the overall world of Warframe and all the mysteries it has waiting for you to discover through them.”
As with many live-service games, feedback continues to be invaluable for how the team shapes upcoming content and future updates, whether it’s kissing in the devil’s triad or running through the Perita Rebellion. In fact, feedback was taken into consideration when the first Orokin Protoframe was being developed for The Devil’s Triad side story.
After 12 years and continued enhancements to various Warframe features, there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight, with Digital Extremes seemingly more energized than ever about the future of the game. That future kicks off with the upcoming major update, which aims to act as the beginning of more narrative-rich content coming in 2026. Thankfully, players don’t have to wait long to experience the next big phase of Warframe, as The Old Peace launches on December 10 on all of its platforms.
