Rockstar Games could be working on a potential Switch 2 port of Grand Theft Auto 6, according to gaming industry leakers on social media. While Rockstar Games has only stated that GTA 6 would launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in November 2026, the rumors claimed that Nintendo’s latest console was at least under some consideration for a future port.

The news of the rumored Switch 2 port came at a tumultuous time for GTA 6 and Rockstar Games. On November 6, Rockstar announced that GTA 6 would miss its May 2026 release window and instead launch on November 19, 2026. The studio said that the extra six months would give its developers more time to polish and optimize the game for it to live up to consumer standards. The release date change proved consequential for Rockstar owner Take-Two Interactive, as the company’s stock price took a hit just minutes after GTA 6′s delay was announced to the public.

Rockstar Games is Reportedly Testing the Switch 2’s Potential

Though rumors about GTA 6 should be taken with some fine grains of salt, two industry leakers stated that Rockstar Games may be considering another platform for its upcoming game. Both NashWeedle and NateTheHate stated on Twitter that Rockstar was testing out how GTA 6 could perform on the Switch 2 console, though the studio has not officially confirmed if that was the case. NashWeedle added that GTA 6‘s release date delay to November 2026 had nothing to do with Rockstar’s Switch 2 tests. Should a Switch 2 version of GTA 6 actually make it to store shelves, NashWeedle stated that it would not happen at the same time as the previously announced PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.

Compared to the original Switch console, the Switch 2 is capable of rendering games at up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second in docked mode. The Switch 2 also has support for Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology, which can make graphically intense games like Cyberpunk 2077 run on the Switch 2 at a stable resolution and frame rate. It is worth noting that NateTheHate added that tests do not always equate to a successful port to a new platform, so GTA fans should keep expectations in check.

So far, Rockstar Games’ only known Switch 2 contribution is the upcoming current-gen ports of Red Dead Redemption, which is being done with help from Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games. It remains to be seen if GTA 6 or other Rockstar projects will follow suit.
