Netflix is About to Get One of the Best Video Games of All Time

By newsgame

Netflix has just revealed that it will add the smash-hit open-world game Red Dead Redemption this December. The critically acclaimed 2010 narrative adventure, which is regularly referred to as one of the greatest games ever made, will be free to play for anyone with a Netflix subscription, marking the first time Red Dead Redemption has ever been natively playable on mobile devices.

Starting in November 2021, massively popular TV-and-film-streaming platform Netflix began adding video games to its catalog. This foray into game distribution started modestly enough, kicking off with licensed titles like Stranger Things: 1984 and simple, typical mobile games like Shooting Hoops. However, over time, Netflix continued to commit to its gaming endeavors with critical and commercial successes like Kentucky Route Zero, Dead Cells, and Hades, which was famously locked to Netflix upon its mobile launch. Now, it would appear that the world-famous streaming platform is doing something similar with the ever-relevant Red Dead Redemption, predecessor to the bestseller Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption was officially added to mobile storefronts as “Red Dead Redemption NETFLIX” on November 13, 2025. This version of the game will be free for iPhone and Android users with a Netflix subscription and will include the Undead Nightmare DLC, a substantial expansion to the original game. According to the App Store, the port will present an uncompromised rendition of both the base game and Undead Nightmare, in addition to “bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition and more.” Unfortunately, it will not include the original’s multiplayer mode.

Red Dead Redemption NETFLIX requires iOS 18.0 or later.

This will likely come across as a surprising turn of events for many gamers, as Red Dead Redemption isn’t available on current-gen consoles at the moment, and it only just came to PC for the first time last year. Notably, this reveal was preceded by a new ESRB rating for the first Red Dead Redemption, which lists it as being available on PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series platforms. Naturally, this has been interpreted as a sign that the game will be ported to these platforms soon, as the Netflix release could be part of this broader re-release rollout.

The novelty of Red Dead Redemption‘s mobile launch may be slightly hampered by its being tied to a Netflix subscription, but it’s still a historic moment for the franchise. It’s the first time that any of the three Red Dead games have been officially playable on smartphones, joining other Rockstar games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Vice City, which were previously available via Netflix Games until last December.
