Borderlands 4’s Update Dry Spell Could Have an End in Sight

By newsgame

Just over two months since its launch, things have slowed down tremendously for Borderlands 4. For about a month, fans were treated to some major updates to the game — attempts at improving performance, balance adjustments to various Vault Hunters, and plenty of Golden Keys for a higher shot at obtaining legendary items with minimal effort. For the last few weeks, though, Borderlands 4‘s update rollouts have been essentially non-existent. There have been updates, but they have been negligible at best, with the primary focus being resetting the game’s weekly activities.

Needless to say, Borderlands 4 has been in a considerable dry spell as of late, with next to nothing seemingly aimed at keeping fans around. In fact, the game’s last major update worth talking about was on October 23, almost a full month ago at the time of writing. For fans who initially expected Borderlands 4, with all its live-service trappings, to retain their interest long-term, that is exceedingly discouraging. What’s worse is that Gearbox has been teasing “new and exciting content” for the last couple of weeks, with no indication of when that content might arrive. However, there could be an end in sight for that long wait, with an excuse to dive back into Borderlands 4 potentially right around the corner.

Borderlands 4 Has Been Teasing Content for Weeks

These teases largely began on November 6, when Borderlands 4 creative director Graeme Timmins replied to a fan on X with the statement, “We’re working on some stuff and hope to lay out some more info in a roadmap blurb. Lots keeping us busy at the moment.” Since then, both Timmins and the official Borderlands 4 X page have made mention of upcoming content, with Timmins specifically pointing to the eventual announcement of a roadmap built around player feedback. The creative director has been understandably discreet about said roadmap, even saying “I hate promising and not delivering” to a fan in another reply.

On that same day, a minor patch was released for Borderlands 4 that targeted a couple of passive skills and the drop rate for a Phosphene weapon — but that was it, apart from the standard weekly reset. Then, November 13 rolled around, and with the teases from Timmins the week prior, it was assumed that the game would get at least a little more than it actually received. Unlike almost every update before it, the November 13 update was not really an update, but simply an announcement that Borderlands 4‘s weekly activities had been reset.

Borderlands 4’s Next Big Update Could Arrive Alongside Its First Bounty Pack

Now, the only thing immediately ahead is Borderlands 4‘s first Bounty Pack, How Rush Saved Mercenary Day. Set to launch on November 20, How Rush Saved Mercenary Day is the first piece of paid DLC for Borderlands 4, and will bring with it a new story, new gear, and new cosmetics for players who have purchased it. While that will no doubt offer those who own the DLC a reason to get back into the game, it may do nothing to tug on those who don’t, who are still hoping for a free update of some kind that will renew their interest.

However, it’s highly probable that the Borderlands 4 roadmap Timmins and the rest of the crew have been mentioning for the last couple of weeks will land alongside the release of the game’s first Bounty Pack on November 20. Since the team has not mentioned the Bounty Pack in these teases, it stands to reason that the update will be separate from the DLC and continue the trend that Borderlands 4 maintained for around a month after its launch. As such, it looks like there might actually be an end in sight to this dry spell that Borderlands 4 has been in, even for those who don’t plan on playing the DLC. Here’s hoping that November 20, 2025 is that end.
