Mewgenics Co-Creator Reveals New Details About First DLC for the Game
Mewgenics co-creator Edmund McMillen has shared a small, but meaningful set of new details about the popular tactics roguelite’s first DLC, revealing that it’s small but substantial, with a bigger expansion pack planned for later on. Mewgenics might sound like a niche offering in the grand scheme of things, but it’s proving to have the gusto necessary to stick around, which shouldn’t come as a shock given that it’s made by the same people who made The Binding of Isaac.
Nothing illustrates the game’s popularity better than the fact that Mewgenics beat Hades 2 in concurrent player counts on day one of its release. With roughly 115,000 concurrent players on launch, Mewgenics won the throne for Steam’s highest simultaneous player count for a roguelite, which far exceeded even the developers’ expectations at the time. The game recouped its full development budget within hours of going on sale, with one million copies sold within a week of release. Very impressive numbers for a fully offline indie offering with a frankly crass artstyle and humor.

Hades 2’s concurrent player count on Steam has reached a milestone that the original Hades couldn’t even come close to achieving.
Mewgenics’ First DLC to Be Small but Substantial, With More to Come
Of course, Mewgenics‘ crassness hides remarkable gameplay depth, and the player base figured this out from the get-go. This level of mechanical complexity is only going to get more impressive as time goes on, as McMillen outlined the scope of the first DLC in an impromptu Q&A session on Twitter. As per McMillen’s comment, the first expansion for Mewgenics is bound to be “small but substantial enough to make many happy,” with four entirely new cat classes and over 300 new abilities for them to peruse. McMillen also stated that players should expect “tons of unlocks and more things to do,” which is promising in its own right.
McMillen and his co-creator Tyler Glaiel will follow The Binding of Isaac‘s post-release content structure from the look of things, with major DLCs being exclusively paid offerings rather than free-to-access updates. In a separate comment, McMillen said that Mewgenics is absolutely going to have at least two DLCs, with the second being “larger” than the first one outlined above. Four new cat classes/collars for Mewgenics doesn’t sound small at all, to be fair, which makes the mysterious follow-up expansion pack seem even more interesting than the first.
Taking into account just how incredibly successful Mewgenics has been so far, it seems all but certain that the game is due to receive even more DLCs over a longer period of time. McMillen may simply not be keen on putting emphasis on content that’s barely been conceptualized at this point. In a third comment on Twitter, the dev said he has “no hard plans outside of fluffing up Mewgenics for the next few years,” which certainly implies a huge amount of post-launch content. Mewgenics is very hard to drop even today, which is no mean feat.
One big caveat of note here is that McMillen’s development history is solid, but plodding. Mewgenics specifically was originally announced by Team Meat back in 2012, and while it wasn’t in active production all along, it’s taken a very long time for it to finally release. Mewgenics DLC is not coming out anytime soon, in other words, but it will happen at some point. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of content in McMillen and Glaiel’s gargatuan tactical roguelite. Mewgenics sports an impressive list of bosses to kill and cat collars to chase after, with dozens of hours of gameplay for prospective players to enjoy.
