A New Little Nightmares Game Has Been Officially Revealed, But With a Big Asterisk Attached

By newsgame

Survival horror fans have yet another Little Nightmares game to look forward to, though some players may want to temper their excitement because the next entry in the beloved spooky exploration franchise is a VR exclusive. Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes is slated to launch for PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2 and 3, and Steam VR on April 24 and will introduce a fresh twisted take on the world of Little Nightmares while offering story connections between the original game and Little Nightmares 2. It will be the first VR title in the series, and early audience reactions are already divided on the pros and cons of shifting the terrors of the Little Nightmares universe into the realm of virtual reality.

When Tarsier Studios released the first Little Nightmares game in 2017, it quickly caught the attention of survival horror fans with its mix of Tim Burton-esque visuals and harrowing enemy designs. Little Nightmares went on to join a number of iconic games that are cute but creepy, and the popularity of the original release spawned a sequel with 2021’s Little Nightmares 2. Original developer Tarsier Studios has since moved on to other projects, most notably REANIMAL, but the Little Nightmares series has continued on under publishing by Bandai Namco with a third mainline installment and another key release on the way in the form of Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes.

While VR fans are celebrating the surprise announcement of more Little Nightmares content, others have voiced disappointment that Altered Echoes will be a VR exclusive. Other games like The Midnight Walk have offered both VR and standard FPS gameplay options, and players who have been following the Little Nightmares franchise for just shy of a decade are keeping their fingers crossed that Altered Echoes will get the same treatment. It remains unknown at this time if Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes will have a non-VR option or port anytime in the future, but players who enjoy virtual reality gaming are already champing at the bit for a brand-new adventure through a modern classic of survival horror.

The popularity of VR gaming has continued to rise steadily, with PSVR exclusive releases like Astro Bot Rescue Mission helping to introduce audiences to the mechanics of virtual reality gameplay. That said, many still prefer traditional gaming experiences, so it is unsurprising that fans are hoping to see Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes getting a patch or port that will allow more players to return to the Nowhere and unravel the mysterious story that connects previous entries in the series. Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes launches for PSVR2, Meta Quest 2 and 3, and Steam VR on April 24, and interested players can follow along for any updates on the game ahead of and following its release.
