Pokemon GO All But Confirms Its Most Anticipated Pokemon Is On The Way
For a while now, Pokemon GO players have speculated about what might be the “big things” for this year’s GO Fest. It’s a big year for the hugely popular mobile game, with the celebration of its own 10th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the entire Pokemon brand, and alongside that come massive expectations. While the devs have yet to officially reveal everything players can expect at this year’s Pokemon GO Fest, first details have all but confirmed one of the biggest presumptions surrounding the event.
One of the key pieces of the Pokemon GO Fest festivities will be the return of Mewtwo for 5-star raids during the in-person events (Tokyo, Chicago, Copenhagen) and the Global Fest to follow in mid-July. And while Mewtwo is a big ticket item for Pokemon GO Fest, the feeling among the community is that Scopely is holding stuff back.
Mega Mewtwo in Pokemon GO?
Speculation has abounded that Mega Mewtwo will make its debut during Pokemon GO Fest, offering players their first chance to challenge the stronger version of Pokemon’s most iconic psychic Pokemon. Moreoever, the expectation is that both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y will be available in raids, giving attendees double their money’s worth.
Mewtwo is Making a Return, But That Shouldn’t Be All
The first clue that Mega Mewtwo is slated to make its Pokemon GO debut is the return of Mewtwo for this year’s GO Fest. Although fans have been asking for Mewtwo to come back to the game for a long time now, Scopely has just recently granted that wish by adding Mewtwo to the 30th Anniversary GO Pass as a free reward. But I think they will make things extra special and up the ante later this year.
Part of the first details about the upcoming Pokemon GO Fest include mention of a special raid at the end of the event that will see all attendees facing off against a formidable foe. If that doesn’t sound like a Super Mega Mewtwo raid, then I don’t know what does. For context, this year’s GO Tour Mega Night concluded with a Super Mega Dragonite Raid where every attendee could join. Perhaps this was a tease of what’s to come?
Mega Mewtwo Clues in the Merchandise
The bigger clue, though, is that the first pieces of merchandise were revealed for Pokemon GO Fest, and they include an image of Mewtwo in front of a dark background. If you look closely at that background, you can see the Mega symbol, which feels like Scopely’s acknowledgement of what we’re all expecting.
Pokemon GO Game Files Let Things Slip
If you want to dig a little deeper and venture into spoiler territory, the practically-definitive clue that Mega Mewtwo is on the way is that the images for both Mega Mewtwo X and Y were added to Pokemon GO just recently. This isn’t an outright confirmation, but past additions have hinted at future events, like Mega Dragonite being added ahead of its inclusion in Super Mega Raids for GO Tour 2026.
At this point, it’s more a question of when rather than if Mega Mewtwo will be added to Pokemon GO. The GO Fest 2026 seems like the perfect place for the Pokemon to make its debut, and I would be very surprised if it wasn’t part of a Super Mega Raid. When talking to Pokemon GO VP of Product Michael Steranka, he suggested that any future Mega Pokemon added to the game would be with Super Mega Raids.
These more-challenging versions of Mega Raids require cooperation and coordination, but the rewards are greater. Mega Mewtwo Y certainly fits the bill as a great reward, as it should be one of the strongest Pokemon in the game when it’s added.
Not only will Mega Mewtwo be the top Psychic-type attacker, but it should also be an S-Tier Raid attacker overall. So not only am I excited for Mega Mewtwo raids because it’s another crack at a shiny Mewtwo, a Hundo, and presumably a background Legendary, but it should be one of the most meta-relevant Pokemon in the game.
