World of Warcraft Announces Huge Improvement to Expensive Midnight Transmog System
Outfit unlocks in the new transmog system for World of Warcraft: Midnight are going to be account-wide. Though this expensive gold sink is currently per character in the World of Warcraft: Midnight beta, Blizzard has confirmed this will change before the expansion goes live.
One of the major features coming in World of Warcraft: Midnight is an overhaul to the transmog system. Rather than applying transmogs to pieces of gear, players can unlock and set up Outfits that can be applied to gear on the fly or in certain situations. However, though applying an Outfit is free, unlocking and setting them up was prohibitively expensive for some World of Warcraft fans.
It’s Official: World of Warcraft’s Most Controversial Mount is Back for a Limited Time
One of the most divisive mounts in World of Warcraft history has returned once more, giving players a limited time to add it to their collections.
World of Warcraft: Midnight Transmog Outfit Unlocks Becoming Account-Wide
Luckily, some of this cost is going to be mitigated in the future. As of right now, in the World of Warcraft: Midnight beta, each character starts with two Outfits for free, with a total of 20 that can be unlocked. The first few can be purchased for cheap, but the price ramps up rapidly, with a total cost of 800,000 gold to get every one. That said, while this unlock is currently per character, WoW community manager Kaivax confirmed in a forum post that Blizzard plans to make these unlocks account-wide before the release of Midnight.
In even more good news, Kaivax also guaranteed the price for these unlocks will not go up – but he did hint that they could potentially go down. “As always, we’ll continue to pay very close attention to feedback and tune costs throughout the Beta,” he said, implying the current Outfit unlock costs may not be final. While it will still likely be a gold sink by the time it is released, the price for some of the higher-end slots could be reduced before then.

This is a huge win for transmog enthusiasts. Some roleplayers have well over a dozen different transmogs for each of their characters, and they were terrified that the exorbitant costs of unlocking Outfits would ruin their excitement over an otherwise exciting overhaul. While the cost of unlocking and setting up Outfits is still a little pricey, making these unlocks a part of the account-wide Warbands system in World of Warcraft is much less punishing for players who hope to fully utilize it.
The transmog system overhaul is likely going to arrive as a part of the World of Warcraft: Midnight Pre-Patch. This major update does not have a release date yet, but evidence suggests it could start as soon as January 20, the day after Legion Remix. Fans who wish to try out the in-development version or give Blizzard feedback about it can do so in the ongoing beta for Midnight.
