Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade‘s Switch 2 version will be even bigger than initially anticipated, taking up a whopping 95GB for the Standard Edition. Fans had expected the game to come with a hefty file size, and the updated figures confirm that it’s far too large to fit on the Switch 2’s cartridges. Anyone hoping to grab Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on the platform will need a good bit of available storage space first, even with the physical version.
Square Enix excited many fans when it announced its fan-favorite remake was coming to Nintendo’s latest console, but some expectations quickly dwindled. Many players were less ecstatic to find out that FF7 Remake‘s Switch 2 listing revealed a 90GB file size, necessitating the use of controversial Game-Key Cards. Now the company has stirred up contention again by announcing the game will actually need more space than that.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Director Defends Controversial Switch 2 Choice
A senior Square Enix official defends a controversial choice that the company made with the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Will Take Up Nearly 100GB of Space on Switch 2
A November 20 tweet from the official Final Fantasy 7 Twitter account corrected earlier listings, saying the Standard Edition of FF7 Remake Intergrade will take up 95GB on Switch 2. The Limited Early Purchase and Limited Early Purchase Digital Deluxe Editions will clock in at a staggering 99GB. While that’s far from the largest game file size around today, it is enough to take the title of the biggest Switch 2 game to date. It’s also worth noting that Switch 2 cartridges can only hold 64GB at present, although larger options could come out down the line. Given that restriction, even physical Standard versions of FF7 Remake Intergrade will need more than 30GB of additional storage.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade takes up a similar amount of space on other platforms. However, the Switch 2 only has 230GB of usable system storage if players don’t expand it by buying a compatible microSD card. That’s significantly less than the Xbox Series X/S and PS5, so some fans are angry that the Switch 2 port doesn’t seem to account for the system’s storage limitations. The need for a Game-Key Card is another point of contention, as many people are wary about this approach’s implications for game ownership.
Not everyone feels the same about these choices. When concerns first arose, before it was revealed that the game would be even bigger than expected, FF7 Remake‘s director defended Switch 2 Game-Key Cards, saying their smoother loading process allows devs to “bring more high-end experiences to Switch players.” Only time will tell how well the game holds up on Switch 2, with FF7 Remake Intergrade set to arrive on Switch 2 in January 2026.
