Amazon Has Officially Cast Atreus in Its Upcoming God of War Series

Amazon has officially revealed that the young actor Callum Vinson will be portraying Atreus, the son of Kratos, in the upcoming adaptation of PlayStation’s God of War. The series appears to be skipping over the original God of War games set in Greece, instead focusing on the events of the 2018 title that revitalized the franchise. While some fans have expressed disappointment with the decision to start with one of the franchise’s later entries, 2018’s God of War served as an entry point for many gamers who hadn’t played the original games.

Atreus was first introduced in 2018’s God of War as the son of Kratos, and he plays an integral role in the main story of the game. Despite being Kratos’ son, Atreus and Kratos don’t start off with a great relationship. Kratos seems to have largely kept his distance from the boy, though the two are forced to come together after Atreus’ mother, Laufey, passes away. The relationship between these two characters shifts dramatically throughout their journey, making the casting of Atreus just as important as Kratos. Atreus was originally played by actor Sunny Suljic, whose performance in God of War Ragnarök earned him a nomination for Best Performance at The Game Awards in 2022.

Callum Vinson Will Portray Atreus in Amazon’s God of War Series

Amazon and Sony have revealed that actor Callum Vinson will be portraying Atreus in the upcoming God of War adaptation set to stream on Prime Video. The young actor already has an impressive line of credits to his name, as he has appeared in projects like Poker Face, Chucky, and Long Bright River. He also recently wrapped on a series called Crystal Lake, where he portrays a young version of the horror icon Jason Voorhees. Playing Atreus will likely be different from anything the actor has done before, as he will be tasked with portraying a young god who is paired up with one of gaming’s most notable characters.

It was also recently revealed that Amazon has chosen the actor Ryan Hurst to portray Kratos in God of War, which came as something of a surprise to fans of the franchise. Ryan Hurst has appeared in the God of War franchise before, as he took on the role of Thor in Ragnarök. In a post on Twitter, Christopher Judge, who portrayed Kratos in 2018’s God of War and 2022’s God of War Ragnarök, congratulated Ryan Hurst on landing the role.
