As a Longtime Battlefield Fan, BF6 Delaying Season 2 Has Me Cautiously Optimistic

By newsgame

Battlefield 6 was one of the most-anticipated games of 2025, and its launch was an incredibly promising and exciting moment for the beloved FPS franchise. After Battlefield 2042 left a sour taste in my—and a lot of other fans’—mouths, there was hope for Battlefield 6 to be a much-needed return to form. It has been in many ways. The launch was massive and mostly well-received, with servers quickly filling up with record-breaking numbers. Map sizes were decently diverse, and environmental destruction was back in full force. However, these past few months have not been boding well for the game’s future, and I’ve been worried.

The player count has continued to plummet since its October release. It’s not uncommon for games to lose players after the initial hype dies down, but Battlefield 6‘s player count has been falling at an alarming rate. At launch, Battlefield 6 hit a whopping 700,000 players on Steam alone. Since then, the count has dipped below 100,000. Now that Battlefield Studios has confirmed Season 2 is being pushed back to February, it raises questions about what exactly is being done to make sure that the next season is an improvement. As a result, I am optimistic about the future of the shooter.

Battlefield 6 Season 2 is Missing its Expected January Deadline

But That’s Probably a Good Thing…Hopefully

  • Season 2 of Battlefield 6 and REDSEC will now launch on February 17.

Originally, the second season was expected in late January, but players will have to wait a few more weeks to see what Battlefield 6 has in store. The announcement was made via Twitter with a simple and short video that’s only seven seconds long of a gas mask surrounded by smoke. It’s a really anticlimactic reveal, but it at least gives a concrete release date to look forward to. Beyond the short clip, there’s not really any more information to base any speculation on. It implies that Season 2 could have some toxin-related event, but that has yet to actually be confirmed, so take that with a grain of salt. There have been plenty of theories and suggestions on how to fix Battlefield 6, and this Season 2 delay is a potentially promising sign that developers are actually taking feedback to heart.

Battlefield Studios Claims That the Delay Is to Use Player Feedback to Improve the Game

The official Battlefield Reddit account has also posted on several Battlefield-focused subreddits, but details about what to expect from Battlefield 6 Season 2 are practically non-existent, apart from the confirmed release date. The announcement did state, though, “During our ongoing development, we’ve continued to review community feedback and, in order to keep our promise, determined that our best path forward is to extend Season 1 and give ourselves extra time to further polish and refine Season 2.”

That’s good news, right? I sure hope so. The confirmation that developers are using player feedback as a guide is intriguing, but I remain cautious. This could very well still spell trouble for Season 2, and it looks like the general reaction to this delay on the internet is pretty negative. Some players have even gone so far as to say that if Season 2 isn’t worth the wait, it could mean the end of Battlefield 6. Now, I don’t really ascribe to that line of thought. I think Battlefield 6 still has the potential to bounce back, even if Season 2 is a bit underwhelming. Battlefield 6‘s Season 2 delay does show that there’s some level of self-reflection on Battlefield Studios’ part, and I’m going to cross my fingers that it means future success.

A Few Key Features Could Really Help Battlefield 6 Rise From the Ashes

  • More large-scale maps
  • Naval map
  • Bring back Operations

More large maps have been part of community discourse since the game’s launch. Of course, there are maps like Mirak Valley and Operation Firestorm, but a few more large-scale options added to the mix definitely wouldn’t hurt. The two additions I crave to see the most, though, are naval maps and the return of Operations. Devs have already teased that a naval map is planned, but hopefully it isn’t a small-scale one. I want to see massive, overwhelming fights on the water that have me gripping my controller like a lifeline. Every player has their own favorite mode, but Operations is one that I really want to see in the game, especially since there’s already a solid base to build from with Battlefield 6‘s New York City maps.

There’s no telling if Season 2 will make any of these wishes a reality, but only time will tell. The content of Battlefield 6‘s 2026 update plans is still being kept in the dark. With the wait for Season 2 being pushed back nearly a full month, it raises questions about how much Battlefield Studios can realistically tweak and improve in that amount of time. A roadmap, if nothing else, would inspire more confidence in players.

Whether Good or Bad, 2026 is Going to Be a Big Year for Battlefield 6

Battlefield 6 had an incredibly strong debut, but keeping up that momentum is no easy task. The game is just a few months old, and it’s already becoming clear just how much of a challenge maintaining that hype truly is. Battlefield 6‘s launch numbers were much better than its main competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Now that both are floundering, though, the competition doesn’t feel nearly as fierce. Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 7 were teed up to be a fun head-to-head showdown at the end of 2025, but surprise hits like ARC Raiders ultimately stole the attention and demonstrated that there are new games on the block to look out for.

The main lesson is that Battlefield 6 has to really kick things into gear if it’s going to not only restore its franchise’s reputation but also be on par with the hot new games that are beginning to overshadow the once-on-top FPS genre. Every Battlefield game has had its highs and lows, and Battlefield 6‘s next season hopefully doesn’t prove to be another low.
