You’ll never guess which game Pluribus star Rhea Seehorn was in
Pluribus‘ Rhea Seehorn didn’t come out of nowhere. Before her role as Carol Sturka in the hit Apple TV series, she co-starred alongside Bob Odenkirk as Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul—a role that even Odenkirk has stated deserved just as much recognition as his, the titular protagonist Saul Goodman. Before her breakout role in Better Call Saul, the actress appeared in multiple TV series, with some of her most prominent roles being in Whitney and I’m With Her. However, even earlier than her appearance on the one-season show I’m With Her, which aired from 2003-2004, Seehorn booked her first credited role, not in a TV series, but in a video game.
In the late 1990s, when PC games were experimenting with live-action footage and strange hybrids of media, the Pluribus star showed up in a project that now feels almost impossible to connect to her modern career. In fact, since Seehorn’s appearance in this particular video game, she has not been involved in any other gaming projects. It’s the kind of appearance that actually sounds a bit made-up until it’s witnessed firsthand, but once it is, it becomes one of those pieces of trivia that shows just how far her journey in acting truly goes.
Every Magic: The Gathering Crossover Series, Ranked
Magic: The Gathering has featured crossover series with a ton of iconic franchises, and they all have their highlights, some more than others.
Rhea Seehorn’s First Credited Role Was in 1997’s Magic: The Gathering on PC
In 1997, Pluribus‘ Rhea Seehorn landed her first credited role as the tutorial Sorceress in the Magic: The Gathering PC game. In a video over 20 minutes long, Seehorn and Regi Davis played the Sorceress and Sorcerer, respectively, where they walked players through the mechanics of the card game in its new digital format. The video can be viewed on YouTube today, though its low resolution makes the finest details of Seehorn’s likeness difficult to discern. However, despite now being nearly three decades ago, it still very much sounds like Seehorn’s iconic voice, only with a bit more pep in it than Kim Wexler and Carol Sturka are known for.
While IMDb confirms her role as the Sorceress in 1997’s Magic: The Gathering on PC, the actress did appear on a recent episode of NPR Podcasts, where she explained the role in detail. Joining panelists Josh Gondelman, Hari Kondabolu, and Paula Poundstone during the episode, the Pluribus star gave the full scoop on her time as the tutorial Sorceress in Magic: The Gathering.
“That was a very early job,” Seehorn stated. “In the original game, it was software of the card game, and it came with a tutorial that would be like a teeny tiny window on your screen about how to navigate through the game. Me and an actor named Regi, we were playing Sorcerer and Sorceress, and it was so low budget that they didn’t have shoes, but they wanted us to look like we were wearing gladiator sorcerer boots. So, we were just wearing tube socks with electrical tape in criss-cross fashion.”
While the role feels more like an ironic footnote or novelty now, for Better Call Saul‘s Rhea Seehorn at the time, it was the kind of work she needed to kickstart her career. It might have been a small win, but for her, it probably felt huge, as she was likely doing whatever she could just to get her foot in the door—and that matters in an industry where nothing is guaranteed and every single credit matters. In fact, her excitement alone about booking the role after all this time shows just how much it meant to her, despite the slight humor that accompanies it today.
“I was so excited that my photo was on the back [of the box] that I went to Best Buy, and I couldn’t afford whatever the game was back then,” Seehorn said. “So, I showed them the picture on the back, and I was like, ‘This is me! I did that! Would you give me a copy?’ And they were like, ‘No. What is wrong with you?'”
It’s a funny story now, but looking back at the grainy tutorial footage from Magic: The Gathering, it’s incredible to see just how far Seehorn has come since then. It may have taken nearly 30 years and a commitment to a breakout role alongside one of TV’s most iconic characters, but she now leads yet another masterpiece by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan in Pluribus. That kind of journey just goes to show how small beginnings should never be despised, as even the most unlikely first steps can still lead to success.
