New EGS Free Game Comes With a Catch
The Epic Games Store has offered a variety of free games during its 2025 holiday giveaway season, and while the lineup of titles has included some true hidden gems, the latest offering has the unfortunate catch of being exclusively co-op. Epic Games revealed that the indie release We Were Here Together will be available for free download on December 26 and 27, but players looking to check out the game will need to make sure they have a friend or family member also willing to grab the game, if they actually want to be able to play it.
We Were Here Together was originally released in 2019 and tasks two players with first-person puzzle-solving gameplay through hostile locations, escape room-style mechanics, and voice communications being the only way to coordinate. Despite mixed reviews for its UI design and occasionally obscure puzzles, We Were Here Together received applause for its complexity progression and engaging narrative. While this would seemingly make it a worthwhile grab for fans of the Epic Games Store giveaways, some players may want to make sure they have a co-op partner to team up with before getting too excited.

We Were Here Together Joins Epic Games Store Freebies for December 2025
It is worth noting that We Were Here Together did receive a major update in October 2025, so some of the older flaws with the game may have been resolved. Another saving grace is the inclusion of cross-play, meaning one user could download the game for free during the Epic Games Store festivities while another could snag the game on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch. Curiously, We Were Here Together is only the second co-op game offered during the Epic Games Store free game giveaways. The first was Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, though that particular game is mainly a single-player experience that simply offers an additional co-op mode. The other games given away for free by Epic Games Store in December were Hogwarts Legacy, Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel, Eternights, Blood West, Sorry We’re Closed, Paradise Killer, The Callisto Protocol, and Disco Elysium – The Final Cut.
While there is not necessarily anything negative about a co-op game being included in a free giveaway, We Were Here Together has the unfortunate catch of specifically not being split screen. This means anyone wanting to play it will absolutely need to make sure a co-op partner also downloads the game while it is still free, with the offer expiring at 11am ET / 9am PT on Saturday, December 27. Interested players can follow along for updates on the five other free games coming to Epic Games Store before the end of 2025, along with any other releases slated to make their way to Epic Games Store in 2026.
