Epic Games Store Officially Reveals Its Free Game for December 18
The Epic Games Store has officially revealed Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel as its free game for December 18. Unlike the storefront’s usual freebies, Epic Games Store users have only 24 hours to claim this title, which will immediately be replaced by another such limited-time offer.
Between December 11 and 18, Epic was giving away Hogwarts Legacy. Being the best-selling game of 2023, this was one of the most high-profile freebies that was offered to EGS users in recent history.

Epic Games Store’s Holiday Giveaway Continues with Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel
As soon as Epic’s Hogwarts Legacy giveaway ended on December 18, the storefront replaced it with its previously promised mystery title, which turned out to be Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel. Regularly priced at $14.99, the action roguelite is free to claim for the next 24 hours, until 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET on December 19. It will then be succeeded by the third mystery title in Epic’s ongoing 2025 holiday giveaway, which is set to run through the end of the month.

A Brief Intro to Epic Games Store’s December 18 Freebie
Developed by Slovakian studio Games Farm and published by Grindstone, Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel is a horde-survivor game that might appeal to Vampire Survivors fans, as its gameplay loop revolves around steering a single character through dense swarms of enemies while gradually stacking randomized upgrades that can quickly snowball into devastating damage output filling the entire screen. As its name suggests, the game is heavily inspired by Norse mythology, with its core upgrades being presented as blessings from deities. Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel originally launched in early access this January before receiving a full-fledged 1.0 release on September 3. This makes it one of the newest titles ever given away on the Epic Games Store, not accounting for day-one freebies. It’s currently single-player only, though Games Farm previously confirmed it was exploring adding a co-op mode post-release. Whether that’s still the plan is unclear.
Recent Epic Games Store Leak Was Indeed Too Good To Be True
The reveal of Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel as the Epic Games Store’s December 18 freebie directly disproves a recent leak that claimed to reveal the full lineup for the platform’s 2025 holiday giveaway. Originating on Chinese social media, the leak listed a high-profile selection of titles, including Total War: Warhammer, Detroit: Become Human, Tropico 5, LEGO Batman, Terraria, and Red Dead Redemption 2. However, since it incorrectly stated that Jurassic World Evolution 2 would be the December 18 freebie, it’s now safe to say that this Epic Games Store leak was simply too good to be true.
That said, Epic may still have some high-profile surprises in store, even though surpassing Hogwarts Legacy will be a challenge. Since launching its first holiday giveaway in 2019, the platform has offered plenty of well-known titles as part of this annual promotion, including FTL: Faster Than Light, Cities: Skylines, Alien: Isolation, Death Stranding, Ghostrunner, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, among many others. Each year, the promotion features a rotating selection of daily freebies spanning a wide range of genres and production budgets, from indie releases to AAA games.
Epic’s holiday season giveaway is expected to continue until the end of the year, with each day bringing a new freebie. The platform’s next regular, week-long giveaway is scheduled to begin on January 1. In related news, Ritual Games’ action platformer One Gun Guy is currently free to claim on Steam, as is Juvty Worlds’ open-world survival crafting MMO Wild Terra 2: New Lands. Both of these promotional offers are scheduled to end later today, December 18.
