How to Beat Kyogre & Primal Kyogre in Pokemon Legends Z-A Mega Dimension DLC

To locate Kyogre’s Hyperspace Mega Arena, players need to look for a 5-Star Distortion with the label ‘Sapphire power of beginnings detected!‘ This distortion appears in Bleu Sector 2 inside Wild Zone 5, in the underpass accessed by destroying the Sludge with a Water-type move.

It is highly probable that the Sludge has been cleared already, so drop down and follow the path through the tunnel to find Korrine, ready to jump into action.

Once players speak to her, the Distortion will activate, and players should select the Alpha Old-Fashioned Donut to power up Hoopa and increase the level of their Pokemon by 100. After a brief cutscene, approach the Statue of Kyogre to begin the encounter. Let’s break down both phases of this hardcore battle for players:

  • Phase 1 – Kyogre: The Legendary Pokemon Ruler of the Seas has a lot of power, and will use empowered versions of Waterfall, Surf, Scald, Hydro Pump, Sheer Cold, and Origin Pulse. Players need to be extremely careful not to bring any Pokemon weak to Ice or Water-type moves, or they will have to reset the fight several times. Watch out for Sheer Cold, as it automatically freezes any Pokemon near Kyogre, and Scald, as its a fast use move that it can spam and it will most likely target the trainer to make it blackout.
  • Phase 2 – Primal Kyogre: Once defeated, Kyogre undergoes Primal Regression, turning into Primal Kyogre and gaining a brutal amount of Sp. Def, Sp. Atk, and Atk. It becomes more aggressive, and it will use Scald as a laser, and what’s worse, it will start spinning around, shooting beams of hot water all around. This is the phase where most players might fail, as it is nearly impossible to dodge them all. Just be careful not to remain standing in the same place, and keep Pokemon inside their Poke-Balls once it starts spinning.

The ideal strategy for this battle is to chip down Kyogre’s Health real fast to prevent losing too many Calories: Remember, Donuts not only provide increased levels, but a countdown based on calories. When it reaches 0, it’s game over.

The ideal counter for Kyogre and Primal Kyogre, is one of the newest additions to Pokemon Legends Z-A: Mega Raichu Y. Those who have been training Raichu wating for their moment to shine: This is it.

Build the ultimate Electric-type squad with this guide to the best Pokemon, movesets, and strategies for competitive success in Legends Z-A.

Equip Raichu with Raichuite Y, as well as the following moveset: Nasty Plot, Charge, Thunder, and Electroweb (or Thunderbolt). Use Nasty Plot three times, then Charge and Thunder, and this will bring Kyogre down in two or three hits. Use Electroweb or Thunderbolt for rotations. Electroweb will slow Kyogre down for a bit, giving players time to land a well-placed Thunder.

Once Kyogre falls, it will ‘evolve’ into Primal Kyogre, so prepare to suffer. Keep Mega Raichu Y (or Mega Ampharos, or Mega Manectric) inside the Poke Ball when Primal Kyogre jumps to the middle of the Arena. Then, Dodge counterclockwise to cancel the damage of Kyogre’s Death Spin.

Repeat the strategy from the first Phase, but be careful, as Kyogre will spam Surf and Scald way too often for comfort. Once players defeat Primal Kyogre, it will be time to catch Kyogre. Now, all that remains is to claim the Blue Orb to enable its Primal Regression.

Best EV Spread, Nature, and Moveset for Kyogre (Primal Kyogre) in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Primal Kyogre is the strongest Water-type Pokemon in the game. With a BST of 770, it can wipe out an entire team of vulnerable pokemon with a well placed Waterfall/Surf combo.

If players want to go for an extremely aggressive build, then they should equip it with these moves: Waterfall, Surf, Sheer Cold, and Origin Pulse. Use the following EV Spread: 252 Sp. Atk, /252 Speed / 4 HP to outspeed other Pokemon and blast everything away. The ideal nature for this build should be Timid, to enhance its speed a bit more.

For a more balanced/sniping build, Kyogre should have: Ice Beam, Hydro Pump, Scald, and Muddy Water. Now, pick 252 Sp. Atk /252 HP/4 Speed to add some bulk and prevent Kyogre from being one shotted by the likes of Mega Raichu. The ideal nature for this build is Modest, to increase Kyogre’s power as a Special Attacker.
