While Barrel Felynes pose no actual threat to the player, their high defense makes it difficult to destroy the barrels around the Felynes to rescue them. Additionally, they are very quick to flee at the start of a battle.

There are two easy methods Monster Hunter Stories 3 players can use to get around the Barrel Felynes’ high defense. The first involves staggering a Barrel Felyne constantly while chipping away at its health. The second method is much quicker, but it does require players to have the Big Barrel Bomb recipe.

Use Staggers and Stuns to Prevent Barrel Felynes from Fleeing

The biggest problem players face when fighting Barrel Felynes is that they will run away on their second turn. For players who do not have access to an item like Barrel Bombs, the best solution is to focus on constantly staggering one Barrel Felyne and causing it to become Toppled. Doing this will stop the Barrel Felyne from performing an action for their turn, leaving them unable to flee.

Continuing to do this to a specific Barrel Felyne lets you slowly whittle down their health until their barrel breaks.

When a Barrel Felyne is Toppled or otherwise unable to act, it is useful to use attacks that hit multiple times since every attack will do a small amount of damage.

Using Barrel Bombs

Barrel Bombs are the most efficient way to destroy the barrels around Felynes in Monster Hunter Stories 3. This is because Big Barrel Bombs automatically deal 100 damage to the Barrel Felyne, which will immediately destroy its barrel.

The weakness of Big Barrel Bombs is that they will only deal damage to one Barrel Felyne. If you are attempting to rescue a group of several Felynes at once, you’ll need to use one Big Barrel Bomb per Felyne. This means that you’ll need to find a way to stun or stagger the other Felynes while you throw a bomb at the first one.

How to Craft Big Barrel Bombs in Monster Hunter Stories 3

Players will unlock the Big Barrel Bomb crafting recipe by completing Kora’s Chapter 1 Side Story. Once players have received the recipe from Kora, they can use the Combine mechanic to craft Big Barrel Bombs from the items in their inventory.

All the ingredients for Big Barrel Bombs can be found while wandering around Azuria. For one Big Barrel Bomb, players will need the following materials:

  • 1 Big Barrel
  • 2 Fire Herbs
  • 1 Nitroshroom

Where to Find Barrel Felynes in Monster Hunter Stories 3

Typically, Monster Hunter Stories 3 players will find Barrel Felynes roaming around the world or running around inside of Monster Dens. They may be wandering around solo or in a group with several other Barrel Felynes. When you want to break the barrel to rescue them, run into them the same way that you do when fighting monsters.

Barrel Felynes are fast and will run away before you can rescue them. When you see one, run towards it quickly.
