Best Characters for Legend & Cataclysm
The Legend and Cataclysm difficulties in Vermintide 2 are absolutely brutal. Every enemy is much deadlier, resources are even rarer, and you’ll need to keep your head on a swivel for every second of a run, otherwise a lone slave rat might instantly incapacitate you. However, with high risk comes high reward, and if you want to experience Vermintide 2 at its most hectic, then you’ll want to use a class that can get you through a max difficulty run without much trouble.

Every class and subclass in Vermintide 2 is capable of clearing Legend/Cataclysm runs. The ones we’ve included in this guide are those that we think will give newer or less-experienced players the best shot of surviving.
Vermintide 2 Playstyles, Explained
There are a few ways to play Vermintide 2, and characters are mainly designed around them. One character’s subclass is bound to better at one job than another subclass from the same character, which means you’ll need to familiarize yourself with how each class plays if you want to be effective with them.

All characters and their subclass variants are flexible to some degree, though they will always be good at their respective roles. Make sure to bring a weapon that complements a subclass’ playstyle, such as the scythe for Necromancer Sienna if you want to focus on clearing large groups. Your choice of weapon will play just a big a part as your choice of class when it comes to doing your job within a team.
Best Kruber Classes
Grail Knight stands out as one the better classes for Kruber, and that’s all thanks to how strong it is against bosses. It’s special ability, Blessed Blade, delivers a single, powerful blow that can deal massive damage, and if you stack enough damage multipliers, you’ll be able to one-shot bosses. However, Grail Knight Kruber can’t equip ranged weapons, so dealing with specials like Ratling Gunners and Globardiers might prove difficult.
Mercenary may be Kruber’s default class, but it’s more than capable of carrying entire teams through the most difficult of situations. The Morale Boost class ability is amazing for crowd control, and it can give everyone on the team a boost of Temporary Health for a short duration too. Mercenary Kruber is fairly tanky, and he’s got good damage too, making him one of the better classes for players who want a little bit of everything.
Best Kerillian Classes
Waystalker is arguably the best Elite Killer in the game thanks to Trueshot Volley, which fires seeking arrows that makes elite hunting so much easier. Not only do players get the convenience of a fire-and-forget skill that takes out high-priority targets by itself, but they also get access to some excellent weapons that are great for everything else, such as the Glaive with its sweeping attacks and armor-penetrating strikes.
If you’re looking for a subclass with a bit more survivability, Handmaiden is an excellent choice. This subclass is great for dodging and blocking attacks, and if played properly, you’ll never go down. Handmaiden also has passives that give it increased critical hit chance, giving you some extra flexibility when it comes to your choice of items.
Best Bardin Classes
Outcast Engineer is one of the best classes in Vermintide 2 for two reasons:
- It has a minigun with infinite ammo
- It gives you a free bomb every 80 seconds
This subclass for Bardin is incredibly easy to use, and it’s a ton of fun as well, even in the most demanding of difficulty levels. You can blow up hordes of rats and Northlanders with your free bombs (with no friendly fire damage), and when something big pops up, you can gun it down with your Crankgun.
Now, if you like playing as Bardin and you’re not quite confident in playing in Legend or Cataclysm, then Ironbreaker is going to be your best option. Like Handmaiden, this subclass is all about survivability; Ironbreaker can absorb a ton of hits, making it an excellent tank class that also does a pretty good job at killing bosses. However, you’ll still want to practice dodging attacks so you don’t build any bad habits. Enemies in Legend and Cataclysm still hit like a truck, after all.
Best Saltzpyre Classes
If you want a subclass that can absolutely melt bosses and demolish hordes while generating insane amounts of Temporary Health, then Zealot is your pick. This subclass for Victor Saltzpyre leverages the naturally-high attack speed of his weapons and makes them even faster via the Holy Fervour class ability, and when you’re hitting things quickly, you can make excellent use of the Second Wind perk, which generates Temporary Health every time you stagger an enemy (which is all the time).
The downside to playing the Zealot subclass is that much of its power is only unlocked once your health gets low. It’s a very risky playstyle, but it is also very rewarding.
Now, if you want something more balanced, then Witch Hunter Captain should scratch that itch for you. This subclass can improve the damage output of the entire team, and it has a passive that lets you instantly kill man-sized enemies with critical headshots. Man-sized enemies include the majority of specials and elites outside of Maulers and Chaos Warriors. This is especially strong against berserkers (Plague Monks and Savages).
Best Sienna Classes
Necromancer is one of Sienna’s better subclasses for Legend and Cataclysm, and that’s mainly because of the skeletons. They don’t last very long, and they don’t do much damage, but the fact that they can take some pressure off you and your team is enough to make them one of the best crowd control abilities in the game.
Apart from the skeletons, Necromancer Sienna is also quite good at dealing with specials, elites, and bosses due to her improved damage-over-time effects and innate critical hit chance bonuses. Also, her Reaping perk that grants her Unlimited Cleave is perfect for dealing with big hordes.
Battle Wizard is a fantastic alternative for players who are looking for a balanced playstyle. If you stack enough cooldown reduction, you’ll be able to kite enemies with Fire Walk, giving you the chance to breathe for a bit and take everything out more easily. We do recommend using a Bolt Staff for killing specials/elites/bosses, though Fireball Staff is a good option if you want to focus more on AoE.
