How to Beat Dybbuk in Mewgenics

By newsgame

Dybbuk is a pretty tricky boss in Mewgenics since he’s really good at dodging your attacks. The trick to take him down is to use AoE abilities and spread obstacles around so he keeps taking hits no matter where he hops. This guide explains how he fights and the best ways to deal with him.

Dybbuk’s health is relatively lower than most final bosses, which might make him seem like an easy target, but don’t let that fool you. He’s The Boneyard’s last standing enemy, and his combat style makes that abundantly clear, reflecting his dominion over this graveyard-like domain. While his health sits between 85 and 1, he relies on two main attacks:

  • Lick: Dybbuk walks towards your units and licks them. This hits hard and drains their mana, leaving them weaker and with fewer resources to use passive abilities.
  • Wisps: He summons tiny purple orbs around the area. These act as enemies, dealing melee damage and inflicting burn on any unit they hit.

But his specials aren’t what makes him dangerous; it’s his evasion. Whenever you attempt to strike him using your basic attack, Dybbuk hops onto a nearby empty tile, effortlessly dodging the attack. This move, known as Blackflip, makes him a frustratingly slippery target.

To make matters worse, you can’t simply overpower him. When a fighter cat attempts to finish him off, Dybbuk possesses its body, turning it hostile against its own team. The corrupted unit then frantically attacks allied cats and familiars, including fleas, flies, pooters, and dibs alike. Only once that possessed unit is defeated does Dybbuk reappear, restored to the 1 HP he had before the possession, and only then can he finally be put down for good.

To beat Dybbuk in Mewgenics, you’ll want attacks that cover a wide area and traps that stay on the ground so he keeps taking hits even after dodging. Hunters are great for this, since they have plenty of specials like that, including Bear Traps, Bramble Shots, and Cross Shots.

If you have a unit that can drop Bramble Shot, then you must take it on an adventure to The Boneyard against this grimy boss, because the brambles spread all across the arena and damage him as he hops around.

Although you might already have four cat characters on your team, you can also bring extra helper creatures to the battle. These have to be minions that you summon through spells or passive abilities. The damage they deal counts as indirect damage, which is more likely to strike Dybbuk than regular damage.

Early on, you’ll only find Hunters to help with that by spawning fleas, pooters, and more; however, players who have cleared The Boneyard at least once can also try Necromancers for their leeches and zombies, and Druids to summon the crows. More bodies on the field means more chances to hit him.

Stun and immobility abilities are super handy too, since they stop him from saving himself. Mages have a bunch of these… Just make sure they hit multiple tiles so if Dybbuk tries to move to a side tile, he’s still affected.

Poison and bleed effects applied by familiars or units are also worth using, since they stick to him (and his Wisps) until the end of the battle and gradually weaken him. The best part is that these status effects stack by one every turn, meaning the boss can transition to the possession phase despite having enough HP. You can acquire related abilities by gradually leveling up your feline on the journey to this specific boss fight, or via trinkets like Barbed Paw, Bloody Knife, Broken Window, Alluring Doodie, Bee Stinger, or Cursed Hairball.

When he possesses one of your cats, just focus on taking that unit down fast. It helps if the possessed unit is your lowest HP one, so it’s not a big loss. And if you have a Necromancer with Reap, you can skip the possession phase altogether and just finish him off at 1 HP.

Before the fight, if you’ve equipped any auto-attacking gear on any cats, make sure to remove it, because if that feline performs well and ends up knocking Dybbuk down, he’ll obviously bewitch its body and use it to his advantage.

Note that if your entire squad dies by that enchanted feline, Dybbuk will jump out of it, and you’ll face the rest of the fight without him controlling it. While you can win the boss fight this way, you won’t be able to snag top-tier units with upgraded stats, so strategizing is a must, especially since next you’ll be going up against Butch’s Tina Guillotina’s first form.

The arena also has hidden enemies alongside Dybbuk called Spookies. These are tiny ghosts that only appear once you attack the RIP gravestones, which can be numerous in a round. Unlike other mobs, they don’t drain your health, they eat up your mana, causing all your passives to become inactive and potentially costing you the fight against Dybbuk, so deal with them first. Spookies have nine HP and can’t miss your attacks, so taking them down is pretty easy.

Once you kill Dybbuk for the first time, a Throbbing Artery will appear on The Boneyard map. To enter it, you’ll need to have beaten Guillotina 2 and equipped its drop, the Putrid Leech, to any of your cats. Just select “Attach Leech” from the dropdown to unlock The Throbbing Domain.

This area is home to the Throbbing King, the final boss of Act 1. Getting to him takes a bit of work, though. You’ll need to kill the giant cat house boss for the third time and travel through The Boneyard again while wearing Guillotina’s Head, a drop from that same boss, to actually trigger his encounter.
