The Wolf Among Us May Be Coming to Current-Gen Consoles

By newsgame

A new report has suggested that Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us is set to receive a current-gen port in the near future, over 12 years after its original release. The Wolf Among Us was originally released on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, but efforts are allegedly underway to reintroduce the series to modern audiences.

The Wolf Among Us was released in five episodes between October 2013 and July 2014 and received critical acclaim. The story, based on Bill Willingham’s Fables comic books, puts gamers in the shoes of Sheriff Bigby Wolf as he solves a series of murders in Fabletown. Years later, The Wolf Among Us is now widely regarded as being one of the best Telltale games. It retains a cult following that is still awaiting a sequel, which was first announced back in 2017, canceled in 2018, and re-announced in 2019. It has been a bumpy road for fans, but there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Telltale games are some of the best examples out there of storytelling in video games, and nothing makes a great story like a great villain.

Evidence of The Wolf Among Us Current Gen Port Surfaces

A new report by MP1st claims that Argentinian developer Trick Studios is currently developing a current-gen port of The Wolf Among Us. It’s not clear whether it would be a simple port to the latest consoles or whether it’s planned to be a remaster, but the report does show screenshots from work inside the studio that “offer strong clues suggesting that the 2013 classic is receiving a technical overhaul.” The images show blurry screenshots of scenes from the original game, albeit from development builds. MP1st also highlights an archived web page from Trick Studios, indicating that a port of The Wolf Among Us is in the works. Because the original game uses a distinct cel-shaded graphics style, its visuals have aged very well, and it does not need a vast overhaul. However, a re-release would be a great way to reintroduce the series, which hasn’t had any new content since the launch of Episode 5 in July 2014.

The report cannot rule out the possibility that the re-release is planned for the Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, which are the only major platforms on which the game is currently unplayable. The Wolf Among Us is technically playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility, but it doesn’t have native ports yet. Still, the report highlights that gamers “shouldn’t overlook the possibility of a wider upgrade for modern consoles as a whole.”

The Wolf Among Us

As always, rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, but a modern port or remaster of the original Wolf Among Us would make a lot of sense for the series. Recent rumors suggest that news about The Wolf Among Us 2 may finally be on the way, following its initial re-announcement in 2019. If the sequel is indeed on the way, then there will be a whole generation of gamers who never played the original. Bringing it back before a sequel gives modern gamers the opportunity to catch up and build hype for The Wolf Among Us 2.
