Are We Getting Too Many Big Warhammer 40k Games Lately?

By newsgame

It is a good time to be a fan of Warhammer 40,000. If the announcement of Dawn of War 4 was not exciting enough on its own, Total War is finally entering the 41st millennium as well. But that’s not all: Space Marine 3 is in development, not to mention Dark Heresy, Mechanicus 2, Boltgun 2, two more expansions for Rogue Trader, a 40k Supremacy game, and even Warhammer Survivors. Warhammer 40,000 is getting a lot of love from the video game industry right now, not even considering the 11th edition of the tabletop war game being expected to be released later this year.

But maybe, just maybe, this isn’t necessarily a good thing. While most of these games are too early in development to have a release date, there is a good chance many of them could drop within relative proximity to one another, even before counting updates to existing Warhammer 40k games like Space Marine 2 and Darktide. What might otherwise be an exciting buffet of 40k could run the risk of oversaturation.

How Much Warhammer 40,000 Is Too Much?

After nine years of waiting, it was finally announced that Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is in development by KING Art Games. The long-awaited sequel to the popular RTS series launches with four factions: the Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Orks, and Necrons. Featuring iconic characters like Cyrus and Gorgutz ‘Ead ‘Unter and locations like Kronus from the first game’s Dark Crusade expansion, Dawn of War 4 is not shy about hearkening back to the best parts of its predecessors.

Though Dawn of War 2 and 3 had their flaws, the original Dawn of War is considered to be one of the best Warhammer 40,000 games out there, breaking the streak of mediocre titles that came before it, and setting the standard for those that came after.

Were that not exciting enough, Creative Assembly revealed Total War: Warhammer 40,000 as well. Starring Space Marines, Orks, Aeldari, and the Astra Militarum, this grand strategy/RTS hybrid will have players wage war across entire star systems. If Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is anything like its fantasy predecessor, fans can expect tons of new factions through expansions and sequels over the next decade, creating a vast, definitive 4X RTS experience.

That’s not all. Owlcat Games is putting out two additional expansions for Rogue Trader this year, all while developing another CRPG in the form of Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. Saber Interactive is also working on Space Marine 3, Bulwark Studios on Mechanicus 2, and Twin Harbour Interactive on a mobile grand strategy game called Supremacy: Warhammer 40,000. Auroch Digital is even developing two games: Boltgun 2, the sequel to its cult favorite 2023 DOOM-like FPS, and Warhammer Survivors, a riff on the genre popularized by Vampire Survivors.

While these games vary in genre, there is some significant overlap: Dawn of War 4 and Total War: Warhammer 40,000 are RTS games; Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, and Mechanicus 2 all feature turn-based combat; and both the Space Marine and Boltgun series are shooters featuring frenetic combat and playable Adeptus Astartes. What’s more, few of them are short affairs. It is shockingly easy to sink hundreds of hours into RTS games like Dawn of War and Total War, CRPGs like Rogue Trader, multiplayer games like Space Marine 2, and anything with the word “Survivors” in it.

The first rulebook for the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop war game was published in September 1987, making 2027 the franchise’s 40th anniversary—an ideal time for one or more of these games to release.

Quite frankly, something’s got to give. Gamers only have so much time in the day, and if too many of these titles are released the same year, they may struggle to get the attention they deserve. Even worse, the games themselves run the risk of tripping over one another, which can affect sales and reception, lowering the chance for sequels or DLC in the future. Fans can only hope the different studios developing these games can spread out their release dates far enough that they can all succeed, and so players can enjoy them all to their fullest.
