After starting the “Doneigad’s Initiation” major quest at the start of the game, Mev will tell you to find the source of the sickness spreading through the villagers. Here’s what you need to do.

Visit Toflan and the Sick

Go to the Dispensary in the center of the village and talk to Toflan to learn about the sickness spreading among the people. Exhaust all dialogue while talking to Toflan, and you’ll learn that the likeliest source of the disease is the fish the villagers have been eating. These fish were obtained from the fishing spot east of the village, which likely means that the water is contaminated somehow.

Investigate the Fishing Spot

Exit the village from the southeastern entrance and head north until you reach the Fishing Spot. Press ALT to activate your Tracking Survival Talent to look for clues in the area. Clues and other items will be highlighted in yellow. Examine the black vomit on the ground next to the large layered brick mound near the beach to discover that a lewolan became sick here.

Climb the ridge to the north of where you found the vomit to reach the River Dritrod. Go to the northeastern part of the investigation circle to discover tracks. Examine the tracks to trigger a Survival Roll.

  • If you pass the Survival Roll, animal tracks will be revealed to you, highlighted in yellow, which you can then follow to reach the next clue.
  • If you fail the Survival Roll, you’ll need to find the clue yourself.

Either way, go to the location shown in the screenshot above, while avoiding the animals nearby by sneaking past them to discover the dead body of the sick lewolan. Examine the body to find out that it likely died from eating the poisoned fish.

Talk to the Miners

Follow the quest markers to reach a pair of miners panning for gold on the river nearby. Approach them to trigger a cutscene where you confront them about the fish. You’ll have the following dialogue options:

  • [Diplomacy] Calm Nilan (If Diplomacy Check succeeds, miners remain non-hostile and you get experience. If it fails, miners attack.)
  • Ask Nilan to be quiet (-2 Reputation with Nilan, miners remain non-hostile)
  • Agree with Nilan (miners become hostile)

Depending on your choice, there are two outcomes to this situation. Either the miners attack you, and you kill them, or they remain non-hostile and you can talk your way out.

Infiltrate the Mining Outpost

The guards of the Mining Outpost will not let you in unless you are recommended by another mminer. Depending on whether or not you killed the Miners in the previous step, obtaining the recommendation is different.

  • If you killed the miners: A Letter to Ganimet can be found on the mining shaft next to the ladder, in the same field as where you killed the Miners. Pick it up, and you’ll be able to say to the gate guards that Ganimet recommended you.
  • If you did not kill the miners: Exhaust their dialogue, and one of them will tell you that her name is Ganimet, and you can tell the outpost guards that she recommends you.

Regardless of which method you choose, you’ll be able to enter the Mining Post by saying you were recommended by Ganimet.

Look for Clues in the Mine Storeroom

Approach the Mine Supervisor near the mines’ entrance, and you’ll learn that there has been a landslide inside the mines and some of the native miners are trapped. Additionally, the Mine Supervisor will also tell you that someone stole the week’s haul of profits, and he suspects it is one of the natives. You will be able to then offer to investigate the scene of the crime to clear your people’s names and get a job so that you can enter the mines and look for the source of the contamination that is poisoning the fish.

The Mine Supervisor will agree, and he will lead you to the Mine Storeroom where the robbery took place. Activate your tracking and examine the following clues:

  • A bow on the ground.
  • A leaf pile.
  • A bloody footprint.
  • A lock that was jammed open with an iron tool.

If you’re having trouble finding all the clues while Tracking, exit the Mine Storeroom, re-enter, and try again.

Exit the Mine Storeroom and talk to the supervisor, and you’ll be able to convince him that your people were not behind the robbery. He will agree to let you work in the Mines and give you a Key to the Mines.

Follow the quest marker to go to the Mines entrance and use the Key to the Mines to enter the Deep Tunnels.

Deep Tunnels

Follow the narrow, linear path through the Deep Tunnels until you reach the Main Well drawbridge, where you’ll find a Miner bullying one of the natives. There are two possible outcomes here:

  • Kill the miners: You’ll be able to loot their bodies for loot and get a key to a nearby chest, but when you exit the Mines later down the line, the Mine Supervisor will confront you about it.
  • Convince the miners to stand down: You won’t get the loot, but the miners will stop bullying the native.

After dealing with the incident, continue east past the Main Well and follow the narrow path until you reach a chamber with a workbench where you’ll find the pile of rocks trapping the miners. The pile of rocks can be blown up using Medium Explosives. Luckily, the Explosives Warehouse is nearby.

One of the branching paths in this section leads to the Forgotten Altar, where you will find Vlann, a rogue native who has gone mad from quicksilver poisoning. Vlann is a part of the Missing Scales optional quest.

Where to Find the Medium Explosives

Use the ladder next to the workbench to go up a level. This is a Bridge Alliance Restricted Area, so make sure you’re not spotted by any of the patrolling guards. Crouch and sneak past the patrols to reach the chest on the other side of the cave. Open the chest to loot 6 Medium Explosives and some other items.

Return to the chamber with the workbench and interact with the caved-in tunnel to place one of the Medium Explosives you obtained next to the rocks with a lit fuse. Get out of the way of the explosion, and the path to the trapped miners will be cleared.

Enter through the newly cleared doorway and talk to the native miners to hear their plea. Use another Medium Explosive on the other side of the door to clear the route leading back out to the front.

Continue west through the Deep Tunnels using the newly cleared passage to reach the exit.

Resign From Your Job at the Mines

After you leave the Deep Tunnels, a cutscene will play out where you’ll tell the Mine Supervisor about what took place in the Mines and how you freed the natives. If you killed the miners in the Main Well, you’ll face the consequence of that decision as well. There are two outcomes to this:

  • If you’re able to convince the Mine Supervisor that what happened was a mistake and the fault of the attackers, you’ll be able to resign from your job on amicable terms, and the native miners will be able to keep their jobs.
  • If you’re not able to convince the Mine Supervisor about your version of events, he’ll get furious with you and will fire you and all the native miners on the spot. He won’t become hostile.

Analyze the Samples at the Fort

Once you’re finished with the Mine Supervisor, you’ll be directed to talk to the Captain of the Fort to the east to inform them of the truth about the quicksilver that has been poisoning your people so that they can use their knowledge and equipment to help you.

Follow the quest marker to reach the Bridge Alliance Fort, and inform the gate guards about your intent to talk to the captain, and they’ll let you through. Enter the Captain’s Quarters and talk to the captain, who’ll tell you to take this matter to the Fort’s Doctor.

The Fort’s Doctor is found right next to the captain inside the Captain’s Quarters. Talk to her and inform her about the quicksilver poisoning you suspect is affecting the fish in the river. After some initial scepticism, she’ll agree to investigate your samples.

Once she’s done, talk to her again, and she’ll say that you are correct and that the fish really are being poisoned from the quicksilver byproduct.

Acquire a Remedy to Heal the Sick

After learning the truth about the poisoning, the Doctor will say that she knows how to make a medicine for this illness. Agree to her suggestion, and she’ll make a remedy to cure the townspeople of the ailment afflicting them. It will take time, and they’ll need to avoid the fish, but they’ll recover.

Return to your village and give the medicine to Toflan in the Dispensary to heal the sick people.

Shut Down the Mine

Talk to Furkan in the Visitors’ House, and he will tell you that the only way to shut down the mine and halt the quicksilver poisoning of the fish is by forging a fake document ordering a cessation of trade order for the mine. To do that, however, you’ll need to steal the Fort’s Seal from the Bridge Alliance’s Fort.

Fast Travel to the Bridge Alliance’s Fort and walk up to the boxes near the Captain’s Quarters. Crouch, and wait for the guard on duty to stop by the campfire (as shown above). Sneak past him to enter the Captain’s Quarters’ restricted area.

Activate your Tracking sense and look for the key on the shelf nearby, and use it to open the locked chest next to the wall to obtain the Fort’s Seal. Sneak back out and fast travel back to your village.

Talk to Furkan in the Visitor’s House again and give him the Fort’s Seal, and he will agree to deliver the forged document to the mines himself, finally completing “A New Evil” main mission.

Next to Furkan, you can find Armal, the resident merchant of the village. Armal sells useful items like healing potions, weapon, armor, and crafting materials.
