How to Solve Mewgenics’ Throbbing Domain Altar Puzzle
Towards the end of Act 1 in Mewgenics, you’ll encounter The Throbbing Domain. The problem is, one of the first things you’ll come across here is a room with an altar in it which requires you to sacrifice one of your cats. Chances are, you’ve already tried doing this and your cat has just been killed and that’s that. In this guide, I’ll explain how to solve the altar puzzle in the Throbbing Domain in Mewgenics, so you can reach the Throbbing King.
What Happens If You Fail a Run in Mewgenics? Explained
With Mewgenics being a turn-based roguelite game, you’re expected to die and fail a run. Here’s what happens if you fail so you can prepare.
How to Solve The Throbbing Domain Altar Puzzle in Mewgenics
When you first get to the Throbbing Domain, you’ll find a ‘large altar made of veins and flesh. It demands sacrifice!’ You’ll then be given the option to sacrifice one of your four cats that has gone on the adventure with you, or to ignore it. You can choose to sacrifice your cat if the Luck stat is high enough, but I’d recommend ignoring it and returning once you’ve beaten Guillotina three times.
The first time you’ve beaten Guillotina, you’ll get the Throbbing Gristle. Take this item to the meaty wall at the end of The Caves, and you’ll open one half.
You’ll then take on Guillotina for a second time and be rewarded with the Putrid Leach for beating her. You need to take this to the artery at the end of The Boneyard. Doing this will open the Throbbing Domain, but now you need to do one more thing.
Eventually, you’ll take on Guillotina for a third and final time. After beating her, you’ll get Guillotina’s Head. Equip this to one of your cats and then head through either The Caves or The Boneyard to reach the Throbbing Domain at the end of the run. It’ll be a point on the map after the boss fight.
Keep in mind this is about to be a much harder run. Guillotina’s Head makes every battle a hard battle, with enemies focusing their attacks on the cat that has the head equipped. However, units that contact or attack this cat have a chance to get ‘Fear,’ and your basic attack has a 10% chance of inflicting Fear.
Equip the head on one of your cats that you’re not too bothered about. If the whole sacrificing said cat on an altar didn’t already give it away, the chosen cat isn’t going to get a happy ending.
The cat that’s wearing Guillotina’s Head should now be the one to interact with the altar. You’ll now notice that the icon next to the sacrifice option is an ‘!’ rather than it being luck-based.
Choose to sacrifice your cat, and you’ll get the following text: “(cat’s name) lies upon the sacrificial slab, and the room starts to rumble… Suddenly, the altar inverts, sucking (cat’s name) deep down into a pit of throbbing veins and sinew. The walls around the remaining cats undule and unfurl, beckoning them deeper into the throbbing domain!”
With that done, you’ll get a rather disturbing cutscene where the Throbbing King makes sure the cat you chose to sacrifice is truly dead. This then unlocks full access to the Throbbing Domain. You’ll need to go on a short run before you’ll be able to take on the Throbbing King secret boss fight at the end.
