Every Major Resident Evil Character’s Last In-Universe Appearance (Ahead of RE Requiem)
This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the entire Resident Evil franchise.
With over 20 spin-offs and remakes and eight mainline entries already under its belt, the Resident Evil canon timeline is naturally a tad convoluted, especially for those trying to get into the survival horror franchise for the first time. While many Resident Evil games can be enjoyed as a standalone experience, the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem looks like it’s going to be diving deeper into the series’ extensive lore than any past entry, and even die-hard RE fans might want a refresher on what’s happened up to this point.
Though it’ll feature at least one flashback sequence, the bulk of Resident Evil Requiem‘s story will likely take place in October 2026. This puts Resident Evil Requiem 28 years after the Raccoon City Incident explored in Resident Evil 2 and 3. But there’s a lot that happens to Resident Evil‘s recurring cast in between.
The Resident Evil franchise is home to seven CGI movies, most of which are considered canon by Capcom.
New Leak Indicates Resident Evil 5 Remake is Coming Soon
A new leak suggests that a Resident Evil 5 remake may be fully in development, and the timing could mean that it could be revealed soon.
Leon Kennedy’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Making his debut in Resident Evil 2, Leon Scott Kennedy is by far one of the most popular protagonists not just in the Resident Evil series, but in the gaming ecosphere as a whole. Since his initial appearance as a rookie cop during the Raccoon City Outbreak, Leon Kennedy has worked for various branches of the US government. Much like many of his fellow protagonists, Leon was last seen in Resident Evil: Death Island, a CGI movie that’s set in 2015 between the events of Resident Evil 6 and 7. This movie sees Leon, Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, and Jill Valentine teaming up to take down a new bio-weapon threat that’s emerged on Alcatraz Island.
After six months of trying to hide one of the worst-kept secrets in the gaming industry, Capcom officially confirmed during the 2025 Game Awards that Leon Kennedy would be returning in Resident Evil Requiem. In the upcoming entry, Leon will take on the role of co-protagonist alongside Grace Ashcroft, with his sequences focusing more on Resident Evil 4-like action.
Claire Redfield’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Just like Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield made her debut in Resident Evil 2 and was last seen in Resident Evil: Death Island. Between those two appearances, Claire took down an Umbrella base in Antarctica, joined the TerraSave organization, and teamed up with Barry Burton and his daughter Moira to defeat Alex Wesker.
Chris Redfield’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil Village
- In-Universe Date: 2037
- Years After Resident Evil Requiem: 11
One half of the first Resident Evil‘s protagonist line-up, Chris Redfield is a particularly prolific legacy character. Following the downfall of Umbrella, Chris and Jill Valentine created the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), an organization tasked with eliminating bio-weapon threats as soon as they appear. A few years after the events of Resident Evil: Death Island, Chris Redfield and the BSAA were sent to eliminate the Baker family in Louisiana. Here, Chris met Ethan and Mia Winters.
Between the events of Resident Evil 7 and Village, Chris Redfield left the BSAA and took his Hound Wolf Squad with him to Eastern Europe to eliminate Mother Miranda. Chris witnesses Ethan Winters’ sacrifice to destroy the village and the growing bio-weapon threat, but not before rescuing a baby Rose Winters. Though the majority of Resident Evil Village takes place in 2021, the epilogue takes place in 2037, revealing a 16-year-old Rose Winters who’s been taken into protective custody by the US government and Chris Redfield. This means that Chris is still canonically alive 11 years after Resident Evil Requiem.
Jill Valentine’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
The other half of the OG Resident Evil duo, Jill Valentine has also been through the wringer over the years. Jill survived both the Spencer Mansion incident and the destruction of Raccoon City, but didn’t walk away unscathed. During one of Resident Evil 3‘s Nemesis encounters, Jill is infected with a special strain of the T-Virus, which is Capcom’s official reason behind her still looking so young in Resident Evil: Death Island, 17 years after Resident Evil 3. In between Resident Evil 3 and Death Island, Jill was mind-controlled by Albert Wesker for a time.
Ada Wong’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil 6
- In-Universe Date: 2013
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 13
A fan-favorite Resident Evil character, Ada Wong was first mentioned in a note in Resident Evil, made her full debut in Resident Evil 2, and was finally playable in Resident Evil 4‘s ‘Separate Ways’ scenario. Ada’s primary role in Resident Evil is that of an anti-hero, with her mercenary profession often leading her to double-cross characters like Leon Kennedy, but not before saving them from mortal danger. Ada was last seen in Resident Evil 6, which takes place in 2013. In RE6, Ada is forced to defeat a clone of herself who’s masquerading as the leader of the bioterrorist organization Neo Umbrella.
Ethan Winters’ Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil Village – Shadows of Rose
- In-Universe Date: 2037
- Years After Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Ethan Winters’ time in the spotlight was relatively short-lived compared to many of the characters on this list. Ethan appeared as the primary protagonist in both Resident Evil 7 and Village, with the latter game seeing him resurrect his daughter Rose and save her from Mother Miranda. Ethan dies in Resident Evil Village, but his consciousness is absorbed into the fungal root that granted Mother Miranda her powers. In Resident Evil Village‘s Shadows of Rose DLC, Ethan assists his now teenage daughter in the Realm of Consciousness before once again sacrificing himself to save her from Mother Miranda.
Barry Burton’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil Revelations 2
- In-Universe Date: 2013
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 13
Responsible for some of the most quotable lines in Resident Evil history, Barry Burton has only made a handful of canonical appearances, those being the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and one of the endings for Resident Evil 3. The former S.T.A.R.S. member was last seen in RE: Revelations 2, where he rescues Claire Redfield and his daughter Moira from the clutches of Alex Wesker.
Rebecca Chambers’ Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Though S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team medic Rebecca Chambers was first seen in the original Resident Evil, her first appearance in the timeline is as a co-protagonist in Resident Evil 0. While fellow RE0 protagonist Billy Coen has never been seen again, Rebecca Chambers has cropped up several times over the years, with her latest appearance being Resident Evil: Death Island, where she administers a life-saving vaccine to Leon, Chris, and Claire.
Sherry Birkin’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil 6
- In-Universe Date: 2013
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 13
The daughter of two Umbrella scientists, Sherry Birkin was a young child during the Raccoon City Incident. Following her rescue at the hands of Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy, Sherry grew up in protective custody and eventually joined the US government’s Division of Security Operations. An adult version of Sherry Birkin appears in Resident Evil 6, where her G-Virus-infected blood has been used by Neo Umbrella to create the even deadlier C-Virus.
Ingrid Hunnigan’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Leon Kennedy’s ‘woman in the chair’, Ingrid Hunnigan made her debut in Resident Evil 4, where she assisted Leon during his initial hours in Los Iluminados territory. Hunnigan has served a similar role in Resident Evil 6 and several of the CGI Resident Evil movies, including Death Island.
Albert Wesker’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil 5
- In-Universe Date: 2009
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 17
Arguably the most iconic Resident Evil villain, Albert Wesker first appeared in the original Resident Evil, where the Umbrella scientist goes undercover as the captain of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team. Albert Wesker’s last appearance was in Resident Evil 5, where Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar foil his plans to unleash a new Uroboros virus, killing him in the process.
Hunk’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Code Veronica
- In-Universe Date: 1998
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 28
Despite barely uttering a line of dialogue, Hunk has become one of Resident Evil‘s most popular cult characters. Hunk’s primary appearance is in Resident Evil 2, where he confronts William Birkin and steals a sample of the G-Virus for Umbrella. Though Hunk has since appeared in various Resident Evil Mercenaries modes, Hunk’s last canonical mention was in Resident Evil: Code Veronica, where a note describes his involvement in Alfred Ashford’s plans.
