Stardew Valley 2 Was Almost a Reality, Reveals ConcernedApe
As Stardew Valley prepares to celebrate its milestone 10th Anniversary on February 26, 2026, audiences may be surprised to hear that developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone not only already has the idea of Stardew Valley 2 in his mind but was starting to work on that sequel project many years ago. The original Stardew Valley has firmly cemented its legacy as both one of the greatest indie games of all time and one of the best life-sim titles ever released, and the surprising possibility of Stardew Valley 2 one day coming to fruition could open a number of new gameplay and story opportunities that Stardew Valley fans have long hoped for.
For those who may be unfamiliar, Stardew Valley is a life simulation game where players take on the role of a young farmer attempting to make a humble life for themselves on their grandfather’s abandoned homestead in the countryside of Pelican Town in the titular Stardew Valley. The game features farming, fishing, foraging, mining, crafting, and even combat gameplay and has been praised for its emotional storytelling and dynamic characters. Audiences have enjoyed a number of major expansions for Stardew Valley, including the massive Update 1.6 and confirmed 1.7 patch, and ConcernedApe has stated that he intends to keep working on Stardew Valley for years to come. With all the big content additions and game fixes for Stardew Valley keeping players engaged, many have been shocked to hear that the beloved developer has already considered the potential for a true sequel that could paint Stardew Valley in a new light.
Stardew Valley Creator Comments on Update 1.7
As audiences celebrate the confirmation of Update 1.7 for Stardew Valley, the game’s creator chimes in with his thoughts on the future update.
Will ConcernedApe Ever Make a Stardew Valley 2?
In an interview with IGN, ConcernedApe was asked about the possibility of Stardew Valley 2, to which the developer responded that he “would love to” work on a direct sequel. Many are likely aware that ConcernedApe and his team of developers are presently splitting their efforts between the upcoming Update 1.7 for Stardew Valley and the creator’s next game, Haunted Chocolatier. And yet, it would seem a true Stardew Valley follow-up has already received serious consideration from ConcernedApe, who revealed that “[t]here was a time where [he] was starting to work on a Stardew Valley 2,” but development on that project was halted to instead focus on Haunted Chocolatier. He further expressed a desire to “capture some of that original energy” that he had when first developing the original Stardew Valley, and both he and his team are still “really excited” about the potential for Stardew Valley 2.
While ConcernedApe is not entirely sure which direction he would want to go in with Stardew Valley 2, he shared two main concepts. The first would be creating “a whole new world” with an entirely “new set of characters,” though he fears many have become so attached to Pelican Town and its iconic denizens that some fans may avoid a sequel that introduces a completely fresh setting and cast. This concern has produced his secondary concept for Stardew Valley 2, which would “use the existing cast” while establishing “a new adventure in the world.” He reiterated that he will be continuing to focus on the development of Haunted Chocolatier but will also “think about” Stardew Valley 2.

Fans have long enjoyed a number of mods and other community-created content for Stardew Valley, and many have been hopeful that some of the features from these unofficial expansions could one day make their way into the actual game. Whether ConcernedApe would draw inspiration from fan requests to pursue Stardew Valley 2 remains to be seen, and it would almost certainly be a long wait until a direct Stardew Valley sequel ever gets made. ConcernedApe has already stated that the release date for Haunted Chocolatier will likely not be anytime soon, and if that game and the updates to the original Stardew Valley understandably receive priority treatment, the possibility of Stardew Valley 2 may still be many years away.
