You can choose one of four starting weapons in Where Winds Meet, and they all have very different roles and movesets.

How to Unlock Fishing in Where Winds Meet

The Fishing mechanic in Where Winds Meet first unlocks by talking to Angler Chu Shuiyang in Qinghe. Chu Shuiyang can be found standing by the water, just north of the Stonewash Strand fast travel point (shown above).

Initiate a conversation with the Angler and select the “Want a Fishing Rod” option when prompted. He will give you the “Kid’s Fishing Rod,” 30x Dough Bait, 30x Worm Bait, and 30x Plant Bait. Talk to him again to participate in a fishing competition to learn the basics of the process.

How to Fish in Where Winds Meet

The process of Fishing is slightly different depending on whether you’re on Keyboard/Mouse or using a Controller.

Keyboard/Mouse

1. Open the Bag (B).
2. Open the “Quick Use” Tab.
3. Equip the Fishing Rod in the Special Item slot.
4. Hold Alt to bring up the Special Items menu, cycle through the items by clicking Left/Right Mouse buttons, and select the Fishing Rod.
5. Find a Fishing spot and press X to start the Fishing minigame.
6. Hold Left-Click on the Mouse to cast the line and release it when the progress bar is near the top to get a good throw.
7. Press Space to shake the Fishing Rod in order to attract fish.
8. When a Fish bites, use your Mouse’s directional movement to pull the fish into the green bar on the top of the screen. The white circle around the fish’s portrait is a progress bar.
9. When the progress bar fills up, press Space to reel in the catch.

You can switch Baits by holding Alt and cycling through available Baits using the Mouse Wheel.

Controller

1. Open the start menu and select Bag.
2. Navigate to the “Quick Use” Tab using shoulder buttons (L1/L2/R1/R2).
3. Equip the Fishing Rod in the Special Item slot.
4. Press Left/Right on the D-Pad to cycle through the equipped Special Items and select the Fishing Rod.
5. Find a Fishing spot and press Up on the D-Pad to start the Fishing minigame.
6. Hold Square on the Controller to cast the line and release it when the progress bar is near the top to get a good throw.
7. Press X to shake the Fishing Rod in order to attract fish.
8. When a Fish bites, use the Left Stick’s directional movement to pull the fish into the green bar at the top of the screen. The white circle around the fish’s portrait is a progress bar.
9. When the progress bar fills up, press X to reel in the catch.

You can switch Baits by holding L2 and cycling through available Baits by pressing Triangle.

If you’re looking for a specific fish, you can choose to track its location from the map by choosing the Herb icon on the map, tabbing over to Species -> Fish, and toggling the name of the fish you’re looking for. This method only works if the fish you’re looking for is present in areas you’ve already explored.

Nearly all bodies of water in Where Winds Meet contain some sort of fish and can serve as fishing spots, except for areas where the water is very shallow. In most cases, the game only considers that you’ve entered a Fishing spot after you’ve entered knee-deep water. You’ll be able to tell if the water you’re standing in qualifies as a Fishing Spot when the Fishing Rod icon in the Special Items menu becomes selectable.

How to Get Fish Bait in Where Winds Meet

Bait can be purchased from the following vendors in WWM:

• Xiong Da, Peddler at Heaven’s Pier
• Hu Niu’er’s General Goods
• Yu Dalang’s Goldfish

Of the three, Xiong Da is the easiest to get to, as he is located in Heaven’s Pier, the game’s starting location, where players will arrive during their first few hours in Where Winds Meet. Xiong Da also sells the Little Toad’s Rod, the upgraded version of the Kid’s Fishing Rod you get when you first unlock the Fishing mechanic.

Both Hu Niu’er’s General Goods and Yu Dalang’s Goldfish are located in the Kaifeng region in Where Winds Meet, which means it will take a bit of progress to get to their locations.
