Some side objectives in Final Fantasy 7 Remake are more involved than others. ‘The Gate Won’t Open’, a Discovery that appears during Chapter 8, ‘Budding Bodyguard’, thankfully, isn’t one of those. This is part of why players have got stuck on the wrong side of the locked gate, thinking there’s more to it than there is. In any case, here’s how to complete ‘The Gate Won’t Open’ in FF7 Remake.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake ‘Just Flew In from the Graveyard’ Quest Key Location

Players that are trying to complete Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s ‘Just Flew In from the Graveyard’ quest can find help in this guide.

How to Complete The Gate Won’t Open Discovery in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

You’ll encounter this Discovery as part of the main story during the ‘Through the Backstreets’ sub-objective. When you get to the Discovery’s location (marked on your map in purple), Aerith will try to open the gate, but it seems to be broken. At this point, she takes you to an alternate route by suggesting you move a large green crate to the left of the gate.

There’s no need to spend a long time in this area to complete this Discovery: you simply follow the looping, linear route until you can open the gate from the other side. There are several dead ends that reward you with minor loot if you look for them there, but they have nothing to do with clearing this Discovery.

As you can see on your map, you have a looping route to follow that ends on the other side of the locked gate. In your way are some minor enemies, plus some walking and climbing, but you’ll have reached the end of the route when you come up against a Smogger for the first time. These robotic foes are weak to lightning magic, so use spells like Thunder to down them quickly.

Once you’ve defeated it, head to a ladder in the corner of the arena near where the Discovery objective is marked on your map. From here, simply unlock the gate from the opposite side you were on before, head through, and continue the Main Scenario.
