New Witcher 3 Mod Adds Multiplayer

By newsgame

PC gamers can now enjoy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in multiplayer, thanks to a brand-new mod that allows players to hop into a server together with others around the Continent. Due to some technical limitations, the mod transforms The Witcher 3 into more of an MMO than a true co-op experience, but it’s still an incredible achievement regardless.

The Witcher 3 finally got official mod support in 2024, nine years after its initial release. Although talented modders had figured out ways to mod the game prior to this, the quality of mods has really improved in the time since. For example, there was even one Witcher 3 mod that allows players to use a custom character instead of Geralt. Over on Nexus Mods, The Witcher 3 mods have been downloaded over 192 million times, making it one of the most popular games on the platform. And despite the game being over a decade old at this point, the mods are only becoming more ambitious over time, and it’ll be exciting to see how they continue to develop over the next few years.

The Witcher 3’s Romance Options Almost Looked Very Different

A senior CDPR official reveals that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s romance options underwent some major changes ‘pretty late’ in development.

The Witcher 3 Multiplayer Mod Brings Co-Op to the Continent

Players can head to Nexus Mods right now to download Witcher Online, a new Witcher 3 mod that allows gamers to play the game alongside other players. Movement, combat, and player appearance sync with other players, as do emotes performed in-game. This lets players interact with others, although there are some significant technical limitations with the mod. Co-op, questing, world status, and monster sync have not been added, meaning players can’t actually affect each other’s game world. This makes it much closer to an MMO experience than a fully-fledged co-op game. Still, it’s an incredible feat, considering the game was not designed for multiplayer at all in the first place.

There are some cool, smaller features that are included in Witcher Online. Players can sit down to rest at tables and benches, and change their appearance to any character in-game using the Custom Player Characters mod, which is a requirement to use Witcher Online. To play the mod, a non-pirated copy of the Steam or GOG version is required, using version 4.04 or above. According to the mod’s forum posts on Nexus Mods, there are some initial teething problems with the early releases, which first launched on January 10. It’s still early days, though, so hopefully the experience will be smoothed out in the coming months. The Witcher 3 is already one of the best fantasy games ever, and it’s awesome that players can now enjoy it with friends.

At the moment, CD Projekt RED is working on the development of The Witcher 4, the next game in the series that will see Ciri take the protagonist mantle from Geralt. The developer is also working on Cyberpunk 2, but The Witcher 4 is the priority at the moment. Before that, though, it seems the studio isn’t quite done with The Witcher 3 yet. Although it’s unconfirmed, rumors suggest that another Witcher 3 DLC will launch this year, bridging the gap between the previous game in the series and the upcoming Witcher 4. Fans should keep an eye out for the next few months to see if CD Projekt RED reveals any potential expansion for The Witcher 3.
