Xbox Gamers Have Until February 20 to Claim Free Game

By newsgame

Gamers on Xbox can currently claim a cinematic sci-fi game completely free for a limited time, gifting fans with an underwater adventure at the end of the world. The Microsoft platform boasts a wide variety of different games for players to try out without spending a dime, featuring everything from casual experiences to full-scale adventures. While games like Fortnite and Genshin Impact highlight the most notable free games available on Xbox, fans can discover a plethora of smaller studios looking to put their games into the hands of players.

Developed by indie studio Tribunal Interactive, Atoll: The Game tells the story of an apocalyptic end to modern society and what happens to the survivors. Players take on the role of a scientist piloting a single-person submarine deep within the depths of the ocean following a cataclysmic meteor impact that wiped out much of humanity. The game tasks fans with piloting their craft to multiple underwater power stations to obtain enough power to return to the surface, billed as a short “feature film length” game focused around resource management and exploration. Interested gamers can now pick up Atoll: The Game for no charge, though players will need to act fast.

Xbox Releases New Update for January 2026, Here’s What It Does

Microsoft releases a new update for its Xbox products, adding new functionality, making quality of life improvements, and much more.

Indie Sci-Fi Game Atoll is Free Until February 20

Xbox users can claim Atoll completely free for the next month, with a special sale setting the game to 100% off. Fans have until February 20 to claim their copy of Atoll: The Game for free on the Xbox marketplace, marked down from its typical price of $5.99. The game is playable on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, and is an exclusively single-player narrative-focused experience. Atoll notably does not boast any achievements through Xbox, however, meaning players looking to rack up some quick Gamerscore may need to look elsewhere. Atoll is currently the only game released by developer Tribunal Interactive, originally launching in November 2021.

Atoll looks to appeal to gamers craving an immersive experience in an eerie post-apocalyptic world. The game’s setting, lying far beneath the sea, lends itself to plenty of stunning and unsettling environments, as players navigate the dark depths of the ocean floor. While the screenshots and description for Atoll suggest that players will not be battling enemies, they will still need to avoid “incoming meteor strikes” in the aftermath of its apocalyptic premise. One image from the game also suggests that fans will likely have to battle their way through setbacks, including shockwaves draining the energy of the player’s craft.

Atoll Joins a Plethora of Narrative-Focused Gaming Experiences

Atoll‘s focus on narrative-driven storytelling comes as indie games have increasingly been used as a way for developers to tell their own unique stories. Many modern indie games focus more heavily on storytelling than gameplay mechanics, seeing titles like Firewatch and Journey put an emphasis on their unique premise. AAA games have also shifted heavily towards cinematic storytelling as well, with some of today’s most popular games, like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, drawing players in with their engaging stories.

Atoll looks to serve as an excellent bite-sized cinematic experience for Xbox fans, with lots on the way from the platform. Many of Xbox’s biggest franchises are set to receive new entries in 2026, including highly-anticipated games like Forza Horizon 6, Gears of War: E-Day, and Halo: Campaign Evolved, among others. The recent Xbox Developer Direct showcase also teased a selection of other big releases, showing off more details for games like Fable and Game Freak’s Beast of Reincarnation. 2026 is set to be an exciting year for Xbox fans, with a plethora of major releases set to launch throughout the year.
