10 Strongest Ancient Pokemon, Ranked
Sprinkled throughout decades of games and anime, Pokemon has gradually revealed more of its lore, crafting a world dense in rich history, evolution, and legacies. Pokemon didn’t just randomly pop up when humans started to catch them; rather, they had been around for an incredibly long time. In fact, some monsters have inhabited this universe for millions of years, or they have ancestors that date back to those times. Unsurprisingly, Ancient Pokemon tend to be extremely powerful, as they would have to be to last for an eternity.

Discover the complete Pokedex for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, featuring 230 Pokemon and 64 Mega Evolutions.
These Pokemon are almost universally rare, strong, and unique. In the case of a few species, only one exists, and that might have always been the case. We are talking about Prehistoric Pokemon, Paradox Pokemon, Mythical Pokemon, and Legendaries, a catalog that almost exclusively consists of powerhouses. Therefore, what is the strongest Ancient Pokemon ever?
What are Ancient Pokemon?
Before getting to the rankings, let’s expand on the concept of Ancient Pokemon. This unofficial term generally refers to four types of Pokemon:
- Prehistoric/Fossil Pokemon – The most obvious example of Ancients, these Pokemon are revived from Fossils, and they have been around since Generation 1’s Kabuto, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl. Not counting evolutions, there are 17 Prehistoric Pokemon.
- Ancient Paradox Pokemon – Introduced in Scarlet and Violet, Paradox Pokemon are relatives of standard creatures, and they can be both from the past or the future. Their origin is largely shrouded in mystery, and they could be either from an alternate dimension or time travelers. They all have a base stat of 570 at a minimum, so they are universally strong, even ones based on relatively normal Pokemon like Jigglypuff. There are 11 Ancient Paradox Pokemon.
- Legendary Pokemon – Not every Legendary is an Ancient Pokemon, but a few of them can be traced back millennia. There are more than 70 Legendary Pokemon.
- Mythical Pokemon – Again, not all Mythicals are ancient, but plenty of them qualify. Unlike Legendaries, Mythical Pokemon are, well, seen as myths within their universe. There are 23 Mythical Pokemon.

Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki & Regidrago
Base Stat Total: 580
According to ancient Pokemon lore, the mighty Regigigas created the other legendary giants after its own image and had them embody different elements. This resulted in the births of Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki, and Regidrago, who represent rocks, ice, magma, electric energy, and crystallized dragon energy, respectively.
As expected from an important group of legendary Pokemon, these elemental titans are quite powerful and, even though they all share the same Base Stat Total of 580, they all specialize in a different stat: Regirock has high Defense, Regice has high Special Defense, Regieleki has high Speed, and Regidrago has high HP. Registeel is the biggest standout since it specializes in both Defense & Special Defense at the same time.

Walking Wake, Gouging Fire & Raging Bolt
Base Stat Total: 590
The DLC for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet introduced a really fascinating concept: Paradox Pokemon that are the ancient relatives of Legendaries. Walking Wake, Gouging Fire, and Raging Bolt were some of them, and they are the ancient relatives to the iconic Legendary Beasts trio: Suicune, Entei, and Raikou, respectively.
What’s especially interesting is that the existence of these Ancient Pokemon conflicts with the previous backstory of the Legendary Beasts’ creation, and they have a surprisingly higher shared Base Stat Total than their modern counterparts, with Walking Wake having a lot of Speed, Gouging Fire having a lot of Defense, and Raging Bolt having a lot of Special Attack. On top of that, they are also partially Dragon Type, something that gives them a lot of solid resistance in combat.
8
Mew
Base Stat Total: 600
Mew is famously known for not only being the first ever Mythical Pokemon introduced in the series, but also because it is the ancestor of all living Pokemon, as it is said that it shares DNA with every single one of them. Its importance to the lore of the franchise is perfectly represented by many of its gameplay characteristics.

Staying true to its concept, Mew is all about diversity. A Base Stat Total of 600 is quite a lot, but it’s evenly distributed, so it can use every stat to its full advantage. However, its best and most iconic feature is its ability to learn every single Technical Machine in the game, not to mention that it can also learn some rare & unique moves like Transform. When it comes to battling, Mew is very strong and completely unpredictable.
7
Mega Aerodactyl
Base Stat Total: 615
With an incredible Base Stat Total of 515, Aerodactyl is one of the strongest Fossil Pokemon, but it’s far from being one of the most powerful creatures in the game. This, however, changes completely when it mega-evolves into Mega Aerodactyl, which has 100 more points in total. It is stronger and faster, and it’s overall an absolute beast in battle.
It’s important to clarify that only Mega Aerodactyl is technically an Ancient Pokemon, but its regular form isn’t. This is because some Pokedex entries revealed that this is supposed to be the Pokemon’s true appearance, so it is most likely how it looked back in prehistoric times.
6
Regigigas
Base Stat Total: 670
The Colossal Pokemon Regigigas is of extreme importance to the lore of the Pokemon world, as it is said that it used its massive strength to move the different continents and place them where they are now. If that wasn’t enough, it also used its power to create the previously mentioned Legendary Giants, which are all quite strong as well.
As expected from such an impressive backstory, Regigigas is an incredibly powerful Pokemon with solid Attack and HP and a diverse move pool. Unfortunately, it is severely hindered by its signature ability, Slow Start, which halves its Attack and Speed for five full turns. This means that Regigigas can’t really stand out in battle when compared to other Ancient Pokemon with similar stats and characteristics.
5
Koraidon
Base Stat Total: 670
- Debut: Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Out of all the Past Paradox Pokemon, there’s no doubt that Koraidon is the most powerful one. This makes a lot of sense since this prehistoric relative of Cyclizar is also known as the Winged King and was believed to be able to split the land with its bare fists, so it most likely dominated the ancient world.
The Fastest Pokemon Of All Time
There have been plenty of speedy Pokemon over the years, but which ones are the fastest in Nintendo and Game Freak’s franchise?
These impressive feats of strength are fittingly represented in Koraidon’s stats, with a total of 670 and incredible Attack and Speed. It is even a Dragon & Fighting Type, which are two of the most powerful offensive types in the game. But Koraidon’s most useful tool is its signature ability, Orichalcum Pulse, which both summons harsh sunlight and raises its Attack stat even more.
4
Rayquaza
Base Stat Total: 680
Rayquaza is so ancient that the group it belongs to is literally called the Super-Ancient Pokemon trio. It is said that it was created by Arceus so it could take control of the skies, and it has always been so incredibly strong that it could single-handedly calm down Groudon and Kyogre when they clashed, even when they were in their Primal Forms.
Gameplay-wise, Rayquaza is extremely proficient in battle thanks to its incredible stats, solid typing, useful signature ability, and the various powerful moves it can learn. Furthermore, Mega Rayquaza is infamous for being one of the most powerful Pokemon ever created, but according to the lore, this is a form that it acquired later by eating meteors, and it was not part of the original myth surrounding the Super-Ancient Pokemon.

Palkia, Dialga, & Giratina
Base Stat Total: 680
The legendary Pokemon of Myth, better known as the Creation Trio, have not only been part of the Pokemon world for millions of years, but they are also a crucial part of its entire existence. Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina were simultaneously created by Arceus, and they were each given control over a key aspect of the universe, with Palkia controlling space, Dialga controlling time, and Giratina controlling antimatter and ruling over the Distortion World.
The 19 Best Pokemon To Use As Tanks
Some Pokemon are much more defensive than others. Here’s a look at a handful that make great tanks.
The three of them share a Base Stat Total of 680, and they are all part Dragon Type and can learn a variety of incredibly powerful attacks, including their signature moves: Spacial Rend, Roar of Time, and Shadow Force. And if that isn’t enough, they can all transform into their Origin Formes, which makes them even stronger in battle. Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina are so important to this fictional universe that it is no surprise they’re so powerful.
2
Arceus
Base Stat Total: 720
Arceus is the most ancient Pokemon in the entire franchise, to the point that it’s even known as “The Original One”. This is because it is said that it created the entire Pokemon universe and every single creature living in it. Arceus is an extremely important figure in the lore of this franchise, so it makes a lot of sense that it would also be one of the strongest Pokemon.
A Base Stat Total of 720 is nothing to scoff at, and it’s also evenly distributed, so Arceus can excel in every single stat and use every move to its advantage. However, the most impressive aspect about the Alpha Pokemon is its signature ability, Multitype, which lets it change types depending on the plate it’s holding. This means that its powerful signature move, Judgement, will always have STAB, which makes Arceus a huge threat when faced in battle.
1
Primal Groudon & Primal Kyogre
Base Stat Total: 770
The phenomenon known as Primal Reversion is one of the most fascinating mechanics in the franchise, as it lets some Ancient Pokemon revert back to their true past form and become extremely powerful in the process. So far, this only works with Groudon and Kyogre, and the nature of this transformation implies that this is how they used to look back millions of years in the past.
According to the legend, Groudon and Kyogre were created by Arceus so they could take control of the land and the sea, respectively, two elements that are highly crucial to the formation of this world. This explains why these two Pokemon ended up becoming so imposing and powerful. Of course, their original versions are already quite strong, but their Primal forms are even stronger, with higher stats, better typing, and more efficient abilities. These are basically pseudo-Mega Evolutions that allow Groudon and Kyogre to achieve their true potential.
