Open World Game With Serious Skyrim Vibes Has Passed 1 Million Copies Sold

By newsgame

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, a 2025 game with serious Skyrim vibes, has just announced that it’s sold a total of 1 million copies. Though Skyrim is still considered to be one of the best RPGs of the modern age, fans have been playing it for almost 15 years at this point. With that in mind, it’s great to see a sort of continuation of Skyrim‘s essence in games like Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon.

Back in 2021, developer Questline and publisher Awaken Realms released Tainted Grail: Conquest, a roguelike deckbuilder based on a dark fantasy version of Arthurian legend created by Polish fantasy and Sci-Fi writer Krzysztof Piskorski. Tainted Grail: Conquest received a very strong reception from critics upon its 2021 release, with it getting an 80 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic.

In March 2023, Questline and Awaken Realms released Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon via Steam Early Access. While set in the same dark fantasy universe as Conquest, The Fall of Avalon is a first/third-person action-RPG in which players create a custom character and set off to explore an open world filled with monsters. After just over two years in early access, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon released in full on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, where it gained immediate attention online for sharing many gameplay and presentation qualities with Skyrim, such as a similar combat system and a similar UI layout. Though it didn’t score quite as highly as its deckbuilding predecessor, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon still received a 77 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, with 71% of critics recommending the game.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Hits 1 Million Copies Sold

On January 20, 2026, Questline and Awaken Realms officially announced that Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon had sold 1 million copies across all platforms. It managed to reach this impressive milestone in around eight months, which is no small feat for a single-player RPG attached to a fairly unknown IP. That figure is especially impressive given the sheer amount of competition Tainted Grail was facing last year, with Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, and Oblivion Remastered all releasing in 2025.

To celebrate reaching 1 million copies sold, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is currently 20% off on Steam, dropping its price from the usual $44.99 to $35.99. Though it doesn’t appear to be part of this specific celebration, The Fall of Avalon is also on sale via the PlayStation Store, with it receiving a 30% reduction, dropping it to $31.49. Those using Steam can also get a 20% reduction on Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon‘s ‘Sanctuary of Sarras’ expansion, which adds around 15 hours of new content to the RPG including the titular new area, new characters, new progression systems, and new gear to unlock.

What’s Next for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon?

Developer Questline has been fairly tight-lipped about what’s next for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. When the Sanctuary of Sarras expansion released, Questline stated that this was Tainted Grail‘s “first expansion,” which would suggest that there are plans to make at least one more. That said, given that Sanctuary of Sarras only launched on December 15, 2025, it’s unlikely that fans will get to experience another full-sized DLC for quite some time. In the meantime, fans can check out the Tainted Grail board games or the Tainted Grail TTRPG, the latter of which has a new chapter that’s currently being funded via Kickstarter.
