Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Reveals Which Popular Party Member’s Story They Wish Had More Content
One of the main writers on Baldur’s Gate 3 is sharing their thoughts on one of the game’s most popular party characters, lamenting the final result of Wyll’s story. The beloved RPG from developer Larian Studios has seen universal praise from fans and critics alike since its debut in 2023, hailing everything from its gameplay to its deep and complex characters. Baldur’s Gate 3 has captured a multitude of awards since its debut, including winning the coveted Game of the Year at the 2023 Game Awards. The game’s playable cast, in particular, has seen some of its highest honors.
Baldur’s Gate 3 boasts a wide and diverse cast of party members for players to interact with outside the player-created protagonist. Players are quickly introduced to some of the game’s most popular characters within its opening segments, including fan-favorites like Shadowheart, Astarion, and Karlach. Each character also has their own major storylines for fans to follow, diving into Shadowheart’s Shar worship, Lae’zel’s shaky relationship with the Githyanki, and plenty more. However, one writer wishes a particular character had received more time in the spotlight in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Insider Reveals Why Baldur’s Gate 3 Will NEVER Come to Switch 2
A reliable insider reveals why Baldur’s Gate 3 has no chance of coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in the future.
During Larian Studios’ recent AMA about Divinity and Baldur’s Gate 3, senior writer Kevin VanOrd shared their thoughts on Wyll’s story. According to the writer, Wyll’s story saw a shaky road to the finish, with Larian Studios unhappy with his story after the Early Access and even “starting over” with the Blade of Frontiers. Wyll’s story was also the victim of a major split in its premise, with the character being pulled between the Mizora and House Ravengard stories. VanOrd even reveals some story segments meant to feature Wyll that were cut from the game before release, including one involving the Red War College. Wyll’s endgame was also a major criticism from VanOrd, feeling that the character could end the game in virtually the same position as he started.
VanOrd went on to discuss more about how Wyll’s involvement in the game’s story had changed throughout Baldur’s Gate 3‘s development. VanOrd cited the need to restart development of Wyll’s story in Baldur’s Gate 3 again after the Red War College storyline was cut, only being tied to Duke Ravengard after. Wyll’s involvement in the Wyrmway segment was also a point of contention for VanOrd, with CEO Swen Vincke having the idea to tie Wyll into the Ansur story, though he reportedly “couldn’t get more than a dungeon boss” from the dungeon. VanOrd suggested that his own health may have taken a toll as well, becoming ill shortly after starting on the Duke Ravengard storyline.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s Party Left A Lasting Impression
While Kevin VanOrd shared his disappointment in Wyll’s final story, the character has still become a fan-favorite member of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s cast. Wyll’s involvement with Mizora serves as a pivotal point in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s party member stories, with players needing to navigate Wyll’s pact multiple times throughout the game. Wyll is also one of the earliest party members players have the chance to meet, being introduced shortly after arriving at the Emerald Grove early in Act 1.
Baldur’s Gate 3‘s monumental success looks to bode well for Larian Studios as the developer moves into its next major project. Larian Studios finally revealed its first game after Baldur’s Gate 3 at the 2025 Game Awards, with the developer returning to the Divinity franchise for a new game. The developer has already confirmed it will be taking plenty of the lessons it has learned from Baldur’s Gate 3 to heart, teasing a deeper character creation engine and some major changes to the franchise’s combat. Baldur’s Gate 3 fans should keep a close eye on Divinity, with Larian Studios looking to repeat the success of the Dungeons and Dragons RPG.
