Starfield’s Star Wars Genesis Mod is Available to Play Now, and It’s Technically Free
Gamers itching for a new original Star Wars story can currently pick up Starfield‘s Star Wars Genesis overhaul mod collection for free, provided they own the base game and the Shattered Space DLC. The effort that has gone into this total conversion Starfield mod is pretty absurd, and it should scratch the itch for any Star Wars fan in the absence of new official games.
As a Bethesda game, it was inevitable that gamers were going to be modding Starfield heavily. The modding potential of the game made it easier for many to overlook some of the sins of the original game, knowing they would soon be rectified by talented modders. A space RPG by Bethesda was always going to be an amazing canvas for modders to work with. It may not have found early success in the vein of Skyrim and its modding community, but there are still years for this to change in the future. Players are already starting to get some really ambitious mods for the game, such as the Starfield mod that adds 300 missions. Long may it continue.
Starfield’s Star Wars Overhaul is Here, and It Looks Incredible
Star Wars Genesis is a total conversion project made for Starfield, which combines hundreds of mods to provide a totally fresh Star Wars experience. When all is said and done, Starfield is hardly recognizable – everything from the characters, HUD, props, worlds, vehicles, enemies, and music are completely transformed, leaving very little of the base game intact. Even the main story gets an overhaul, and it’s now a storyline about a Yuuzhan Vong invasion. According to the project’s website, “Star Wars Genesis is developed with a gameplay-first philosophy. The goal is an immersive RPG with a unique story and expansive endgame, rather than a re-skin of Starfield with the same flaws.” It’s a pretty absurd Starfield mod project in its vast ambition, where players can “spend exploring Tattooine as a drifter” in one moment, and “stumble upon a forgotten Clone Wars battlefield and loot authentic Clone Trooper armor” the next.
Star Wars Genesis is installed via Wabbajack, which makes the process pretty straightforward. It doesn’t cost anything, of course, or else the project’s creator would very quickly face the wrath of Disney’s lawyers. However, players do need to own the base Starfield game, as well as its Shattered Space expansion, so those who already don’t have it will need to grab it before they can play Star Wars Genesis. It’s pretty heavy on the system requirements, too – players will need 250 GB storage space to install this collection, rising to 315 GB if they want to play with the optional HD overhaul. The creator claims that Star Wars Genesis is never coming to the Xbox version of Starfield, due to the Xbox Series X/S’s 100 GB mod limit, so it’s PC-exclusive.

It doesn’t seem that players will need to worry about Star Wars Genesis being taken down any time soon. The creator points to other Star Wars fan projects in other games that have survived the test of time, adhering to copyright laws and avoiding a takedown notice. They even say that they “have obtained express permission from LucasFilm directly for many of the music tracks included in my Star Wars Music and Ambience Overhaul mod, which is included in this modlist,” including music from “classic Star Wars games such as KOTOR I/II, SWTOR, and Force Unleashed.” Naturally, this is always a concern with huge total conversion mods like this, but it shouldn’t be the case here.
For those who were initially disappointed in Starfield, Star Wars Genesis may be the breath of fresh air needed to enjoy the game. Equally, for those who have been frustrated by recent Star Wars games, this mod could be exactly what they’re looking for. A new update for the mod is on the way later this month, which will add lightsabers to Star Wars Genesis. It’s not to be missed.
