Diablo 4’s Dark Citadel Has Been Broken For Weeks
It turns out that Diablo 4‘s Dark Citadel has been pretty badly broken for weeks, and players are only just noticing. Because Dark Citadel is a co-op endgame activity in Diablo 4, it doesn’t always attract the highest number of players, which is how its broken elements have gone unnoticed by the community. However, the hope is that now that people are aware, Blizzard’s attention can be drawn to the problems, so they can be fixed.
The Dark Citadel was first introduced in Diablo 4‘s Vessel of Hatred expansion as a new co-op dungeon that players could complete with others. At Level 60 and Torment 1, players can head to the Dark Citadel with up to three other players and complete any of the three wings: Enclave of Strife, Dominion of Zagraal, and Labyrinth of Souls. Each wing has its own boss to defeat, and players must complete a series of puzzles along the way. While Dark Citadel runs can technically be completed with just two players, having a party of four is recommended for faster clearing times. But because it’s a co-op game mode, a lot of players don’t necessarily play it, with many instead choosing to grind other activities, such as the Pit, when reaching Diablo 4‘s endgame.
This Diablo 4 Feature is Only 2 Seasons Old, But Already Feels Irrelevant
As Diablo 4 undergoes some massive changes in Season 11, one relatively new feature seems to have been swept under the rug in the process.
Diablo 4’s Dark Citadel is Broken Right Now
A recent Reddit thread by user SheWhoHates has raised some massive issues with the Dark Citadel in Diablo 4 at the moment. There are reports of no loot drops at all from the Dominion of Zagraal wing, and the same has been noted when defeating Faeroch, the Incinerator in the Labyrinth of Souls. No loot drops are a massive frustration, but arguably the biggest issue is that some players are finding that completing Dark Citadel Tier 4 for the first time isn’t rewarding the Greater Helm of the Khazra cosmetic. This claim was backed up by others in the thread, while another user claimed they got the helmet cosmetic. This is arguably worse than it not working at all, as it then essentially becomes pot luck as to whether a player will receive their rightful reward. At least if it was not dropping at all, players could simply avoid it altogether until it was fixed.
According to the user, these issues have been prevalent for weeks, which “ruined our plans for holiday transmog hunting.” Another player in the thread pointed out that it “shows how little people play it that you have the first post about it weeks into the season.” With so much else to do in Diablo 4 Season 11, it makes sense that an already unpopular mode having problems like this could go under the radar. It is, however, significant that the only thing many will play the Dark Citadel for (cosmetic unlocks) is the feature that is broken at the moment. Blizzard hasn’t responded to reports of issues with the Dark Citadel yet, but hopefully with renewed attention, this will be fixed swiftly.
The new year is officially here, and it’s going to be a very exciting 12 months for Diablo 4 fans. Season 12 is set to release in March, although Blizzard has not yet revealed the theme of the upcoming season. Beyond that, Diablo 4‘s Lord of Hatred expansion is launching on April 28, which should be the most significant content drop since 2024’s Vessel of Hatred. Again, Blizzard hasn’t spoken about everything coming in Lord of Hatred, but it’s known that another new class (on top of the recently released Paladin) is on the way, as well as a new campaign and a level cap increase.
