Steam Users Have 4 Free Games to Play for January 2026

By newsgame

Steam users are being given a selection of new games to try out for the new year, with four games spanning a variety of different genres. The mega-popular online gaming marketplace boasts one of the largest selections of games of any online storefront, with hundreds of thousands to choose from. Steam carries everything from the biggest AAA games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Battlefield 6, to a plethora of indie games from smaller developers. The platform also offers players plenty of games they can try out without spending a dime.

Steam’s library packs a robust selection of free-to-play games spanning many different genres within its library, from online games to indie experiences. Steam features plenty of popular free MMORPGs as part of its selection, with fan-favorites like Guild Wars 2 and Lost Ark available to download. Steam will also often give out select games for free as a part of its major sales events, teaming up with indie developers to get new games into the hands of even more players. Now, Steam is giving players the chance to pick up four different games for free to kick off 2026.

Steam Users Have Until January 10 to Claim 8-Player Game Completely Free of Charge

Steam users have the chance to add yet another game to their digital library, but only if they claim it by January 10.

Steam is Giving Away 4 Free Games

Steam is currently giving fans the chance to pick up four different games for no charge, all being recent releases to the platform. Steam users can add roguelike RPG TOREROWA, deck builder Cybersoul, card game Land Run, and top-down shooter Herofrenia Infinite Hyperdeath to their libraries for no charge. Herofrenia and Land Run both serve as debut releases for their developer, while Cybersoul‘s developer has a small selection of deck builder games in its repertoire. TOREROWA developer Asobimo arguably has the biggest footprint of the four free games, with the studio having developed mobile MMORPG Sword Art Online: Integral Factor based on the popular anime. All four games notably do not have an end date for their free status listed, likely remaining free-to-play.

While the selection of free games does not include any big-name franchises, the games boast a wide variety of genres. TOREROWA offers both co-op and PvP gameplay within its roguelike dungeons, allowing teams of up to three players to battle monsters and collect loot. Gamers interested in Herofrenia Infinite Hyperdeath should keep in mind that the game currently does not have an English-language version, with all menus and dialogue being written in Brazilian Portuguese. Each game is also a fairly new release to Steam, with all four releasing in the week leading up to Christmas.

Steam Has Become a Hub for Indie Developers

Steam’s library of indie games continues to grow with more small developers choosing to launch on the platform with each passing month. The marketplace has been home to some of the biggest breakout hits in indie gaming, with popular indie titles like Hades and Stardew Valley first releasing on Steam. The recent Steam Awards even saw an indie game capture the platform’s highest honor, seeing Hollow Knight: Silksong win Game of the Year from the PC gaming marketplace. Other indie games like PEAK, Hades 2, and RV There Yet? also received awards from the Steam presentation.

2025 served as a banner year for indie games as a whole, even beyond the previously-mentioned Steam Awards. The Game Awards saw a massively popular indie RPG win its highest honor, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 receiving the “Game of the Year” award. Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades 2 also received nominations for the same award, while Best Indie Game included nods for some other beloved indie games like Ball x Pit and Blue Prince. The indie gaming scene grows larger every year, and Steam continues to be one of the most popular platforms to find the newest up-and-coming developers.
