Finding Emmie Walkthrough (Buddy’s Key)
Buddy’s Key is a key item for the Finding Emmie quest in Divinity: Original Sin 2. When players first acquire it from Buddy the dog, they are only given a vague clue about where exactly to use the key and what it unlocks.
Additionally, the Finding Emmie quest asks players to find a dog named Emmie, but doesn’t provide specifics about exactly where she is located. This guide covers the exact location of Buddy’s Key as well as how to use it to find Emmie in Act 1 of DOS2. Here’s the breakdown.
19 Best Weapons In Divinity Original Sin 2
Divinity Original Sin 2 has tons of weapons for players to chose from. These are the best of the bunch.
How to Get Buddy’s Key in DOS2
Buddy’s Key Location
Have a companion with the Pet Pal talent talk to Buddy, the black dog near the Caverns entrance in Fort Joy, and select the following dialogue options:
- Ask the pooch what’s the matter.
- Tell him to try you.
- Ask whether this Emmie is the reason he seems so blue.
- Scratch behind the pooch’s ear. He’s not alone for now, at least.
Buddy will tell you to wait, that he has something to show, and run to a spot on the other side of the small pond nearby and dig up “Buddy’s Key.”
Pick up Buddy’s Key from the rock mound and talk to Buddy again. He will tell you that it was dropped by a Magister wearing white clothes who took Emmie, his mate. This will trigger the “Finding Emmie” quest.
Buddy the dog will not talk to you if you have the Black Cat following you around. To circumvent this, have a party member initiate a conversation with the Black Cat far away near Griff’s camp. Then, unchain a character with the Pet Pal talent and talk to Buddy to start a conversation.
How to Use Buddy’s Key (Finding Emmie) in DOS2
Finding Emmie Walkthrough
Buddy’s Key can be used to open a set of doors on the main floor of Fort Joy in DOS2, where a group of four Source Hounds is standing guard. One of these Source Hands is Buddy’s mate, Emmie.
The easiest way to enter Fort Joy is by using the Teleportation Gloves acquired by looting the Saltwater Crocodile located on the western beach. Use these gloves to teleport up to the balcony near the Fort Joy main gates and drop the ladder nearby to allow the rest of the party to climb up.
Unlock the door using Buddy’s Key, and Source Hound Bruno will initiate the conversation. To complete Finding Emmie, choose the following dialogue options:
- Squint at the hound called Emmie and ask if she knows an old dog named Buddy.
- Tell her Buddy misses her very, very much.
This will complete the quest, and you will receive 2200 XP. For maximum gain, you can still attack and kill the Source Hounds, which will give you 125 XP each, for a total of 2700 XP. Doing this will not fail the quest.
You can loot a Shiny Red Ball from the Magister Houndmaster from the basement of Fort Joy (accessible by taking the stairs in front of the locked door). If it is in your inventory when you talk to Source Hound Bruno, you get the option of throwing the red ball toward the hounds, which makes all of them non-hostile. Doing this also completes the Finding Emmie quest, but you don’t get the dialogue about Buddy being Emmie’s mate as Emmie gets too distracted by the ball.
If you return to Buddy, you can tell him that you found his mate Emmie in Fort Joy and that she is alive. Despite that, however, there is no way to reunite Emmie and Buddy. One will always remain in prison, and the other will always be on the beach.
If you have removed your Source Collar or escaped Fort Joy (and then returned), all Source Hounds will become immediately hostile if you unlock the door using Buddy’s Key. To circumvent this, go and recruit a companion who still has their Source Collar or did not complete the Escape Fort Joy objectives with you and have them talk to the Source Hounds in your stead, provided they have the Pet Pal talent as well.
