Fan-Favorite Final Fantasy 14 Character Might Have Been Recast
Final Fantasy 14 fans are concerned G’raha Tia may no longer be voiced by Wicked star Jonathan Bailey as of Patch 7.4. The popular Scion of the Seventh Dawn plays a role in the latest Final Fantasy 14 update, but the delivery of his voice acting has provoked some questions from the community.
On December 16, Final Fantasy 14 released Patch 7.4, Into the Mist. Beyond tons of new features, such as the removal of nearly all glamour restrictions, this major update concluded the Arcadion raid story, and began building the narrative bridge between Dawntrail and the critically-acclaimed MMORPG’s next expansion.
Final Fantasy 14 Players are Flocking to See a New ‘MissingNo’ Glitch
Final Fantasy 14’s Patch 7.4 is officially in place, but it seems to have had the unintended effect of introducing a ‘MissingNo’-like glitch.
Is Jonathan Bailey Still G’raha Tia in Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.4?
However, one aspect of this new update has players more than a little concerned. G’raha Tia, the time-traveling Sharlayan Archon and member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn in Final Fantasy 14, returns in several voiced cutscenes during Patch 7.4. That said, his voice sounds quite different than usual, leading fans to speculate that Jonathan Bailey, G’raha’s long-time English voice actor, did not play him in the update, and fear that the character may have been recast.
G’raha Tia is one of the most popular characters in the game, often appearing near the top of Final Fantasy 14 favorite character lists.
Beyond his role as G’raha, players may recognize Bailey from his roles as Prince Fiyero in Wicked, Dr. Henry Loomis in Jurassic World: Rebirth, and Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Bridgerton. Bailey was also named as People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” this year, and was reported by Variety as the highest-grossing actor of 2025. Despite his popularity, Bailey has not been shy about his love of portraying G’raha, as he revealed at the 5:10 mark of a Roll Play dice game interview with BAFTA last year.
There has been speculation that G’raha’s lines might have been recorded by someone else in this update, with some fans stating that he sounds more like Fandaniel voice actor Jeremy Ang Jones than Bailey. This confusion has led to players wondering if the star was recast, or if the actor simply was too busy to record all of his lines, leading to FF14 using a temporary substitute. Square Enix has yet to comment on the matter, though Kotaku received a discouraging update from one of Bailey’s representatives: the actor “won’t be commenting or participating in any interviews regarding FFXIV” at this time.
Stranger still, even the trailer for Final Fantasy 14’s Into the Mist update buried G’raha’s lines. In the Japanese version of the trailer, G’raha speaks at the 1:06 mark, but in the English version, a different female character speaks instead. While the reason for this is unclear, it may have been to hide the fact that the character had been recast, or at least that the quality of the lines was unfit for the trailer.
Jonathan Bailey Might Still Be G’raha Tia in Final Fantasy 14 After All
However, all hope is not lost yet. According to fan and voice actor Josefumi on Twitter, 7.4 G’raha sounds like it could be Bailey recording from a low-quality mic, or perhaps with a sickness or throat injury. As he mentioned in the BAFTA video, Bailey had gotten a swollen tongue while performing Company, but he was “so determined” to keep embodying the character that he recorded lines between shows regardless. It is possible these lines were the aforementioned ones he warned fans about in the video – or that the same thing happened again, considering how busy the actor must have been, given the popularity of Wicked and Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Regardless, until Final Fantasy 14 or Bailey himself says something, this is all largely speculative. Final Fantasy 14 has re-recorded lines elsewhere, as it did with Wuk Lamat after Dawntrail’s release, so if Bailey is still playing the character, gamers will have to see if it does the same with G’raha’s strange 7.4 dialogue in the future. Regardless, G’raha remains an incredibly popular character and is bound to continue to play a speaking role, so if Bailey has truly been recast, it is only a matter of time until fans find out.
