Job Listing Teases New Hogwarts Legacy 2 Features
Rumors continue to swirl around what Hogwarts Legacy 2 may have in store for players, and a recent job listing by Warner Bros. Games seems to indicate that competitive online multiplayer will be on the way for a Wizarding World sequel. The original Hogwarts Legacy was one of the best-selling games of 2023 and remains one of the most-played titles across gaming platforms, so it should come as no surprise that another gaming entry for the Harry Potter franchise is on the way. However, some fans may be surprised to hear just how different a sequel may be from its predecessor.
Previous job listings by WB for Avalanche Software have indicated that a Hogwarts Legacy sequel may be an online multiplayer RPG, deviating away from the single-player experience offered in the original game. While those specific career posts did not outright state that the in-development project is a new Wizarding World title, the listings did share a number of cross-over requirements and hiring preferences as older posts that specifically sought individuals with “a deep understanding of the wizarding world.” Avalanche has worked on multiple games simultaneously in the past, but the studio has since shifted its focus, which may indicate that this online multiplayer RPG could in fact be Hogwarts Legacy 2. The latest job listings by WB are once again looking to fill more roles for this particular project, suggesting that development is ramping up on what may be a major release.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 will Feature Branching Narratives
Hogwarts Legacy 2 seems to be moving in a different direction with its storytelling, with branching narratives as the narrative focus.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 May Feature Competitive Quidditch and Dueling
One of the newest WB career posts for Avalanche seeks a Senior Software Engineer, Backend to work on a new online multiplayer RPG. The job description mirrors other listings that hinted Hogwarts Legacy 2 could be free-to-play, with repeated references to online services, backend services, and live game services. Most notably, this new listing is the first to mention a requirement for potential candidates to provide technical support for “player data persistence, matchmaking, lobbies, and server infrastructure.” The inclusion of matchmaking and lobbies seems to suggest that the online multiplayer RPG will include some sort of competitive gameplay. Players have long lamented the lack of Quidditch matches and PvP dueling in Hogwarts Legacy, and this key detail in this career post may be hinting at these competitive gameplay mechanics finally coming with a sequel.
Of course, there has been no official announcement of whether Hogwarts Legacy 2 will be an MMORPG or if it will take the single-player route and simply include limited online features, but the confirmed online multiplayer RPG in the works at Avalanche has raised more than a few eyebrows, with the tease of matchmaking and lobbies now opening a new realm of possibilities for another Wizarding World title. Even more so, the high demand for competitive Quidditch and dueling certainly lines up with a new Hogwarts Legacy game offering online features, though it remains to be seen if the matchmaking and lobbies could be receiving priority treatment or if they would take a backseat to other gameplay.
For those who may be unhappy to hear of the potential for a Hogwarts Legacy sequel becoming an online multiplayer game, there is still the potential for Hogwarts Legacy 2 to remain single-player. Some have speculated that Avalanche may go the route of developing both a direct sequel and a spin-off, with the latter potentially being the MMORPG. There is also the possibility that the job listings looking for expert knowledge of the Wizarding World and those seeking seasoned veterans of live-service gaming are unrelated. That said, there is arguably a major project (or two) in the works at Avalanche with the sheer amount of hiring by WB throughout 2025, and Hogwarts Legacy 2 would seem a no-brainer following the massive success of its predecessor.
