Epic Games Store Officially Reveals Its December 20 Free Game

The Epic Games Store has officially revealed Blood West as its free game for December 20. As was the case with the platform’s previous two promotional offers, Epic Games Store users have only 24 hours to claim this Weird West freebie.

Epic’s annual holiday season giveaway officially started with Hogwarts Legacy on December 11. However, that title was free to claim for a full week, and it wasn’t until December 18 that the storefront returned to its traditional holiday giveaway format where new freebies are introduced each day, but are only available for 24 hours and aren’t announced in advance. The first of those daily free mystery titles was Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel, followed by Eternights.

Now that Epic’s Eternights giveaway has officially ended, the 2025 holiday season promotion is continuing with the open-world stealth game Blood West, which was revealed as its fourth mystery game. The newly launched freebie is available to claim for exactly 24 hours, until December 21, at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET. The ongoing offer marks the first time ever that the Epic Games Store is giving away Blood West.

A Brief Intro to Blood West

Developed by Polish studio Hyperstrange, Blood West is a stealth-focused first-person shooter that rewards adaptive play, set in a Weird West open world full of eldritch horrors and other types of monsters, ranging from ghouls and zombies to flying skull spirits and the incredibly unnerving Skin Seekers. Its gameplay loop largely revolves around scouting enemy encampments and figuring out the best way to clear them out quietly, with a guns-blazing approach being a valid plan B. Originally released in February 2022, Blood West generated positive buzz at launch, as reflected in its “Strong” rating on OpenCritic, derived from an average score of 81 and an 83% reviewer recommendation rate.

Blood West is an immersive sim-adjacent game inspired by everything from Thief and STALKER to Hunt: Showdown. Its protagonist is voiced by Stephen Russell, best known as the voice of Garrett from the Thief franchise and Corvo Attano from Dishonored. The game features a hybrid progression system combining gear-based upgrades with RPG-style perk and skill unlocks. Its art style is rooted in a low-poly 3D aesthetic reminiscent of early 2000s first-person shooters. Textures and character models are deliberately crude by modern standards, reinforcing the game’s gritty, retro horror shooter tone.

Epic Games Store’s Holiday Season 2025 Giveaway: All Freebies so Far

The Epic Games Store’s 2025 holiday season giveaway is set to include 11 more free titles, with one released daily through the end of December. The platform is expected to resume its regular weekly giveaway format on January 1, when it will likely launch a new free title and announce the offering(s) planned for January 8.
