Best Dragon-Type Pokemon in Legends Z-A: Stats, Movesets & Locations

By newsgame

In Pokemon Legends Z-A Dragon-type Pokemon are a lethal group of species that are often pseudo-legendaries or even true Legendary Pokemon. They boast incredible attacks and powerful moves. On the downside, most of them are weak to their own Type, and to Ice, and Fairy-types, the latter, also being immune to all Dragon-type moves.

If players want to be the ultimate Dragon-type trainers, they shouldn’t miss this guide about the best Dragon-type Pokemon in Legends Z-A, to find everything about some of the strongest Pokemon in the game, how to train them to perfection, and their best Movesets for both PvP and PvE battles.

BST (Base Stat Total) is read from left to right as follows: HP/Atk /Sp. Atk/Def/Sp. Def/Speed

Zygarde

Legendary, And For A Good Reason

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 4 Sp. Def
  • Best Nature: Impish (Defense ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Thousand Arrows, Thousand Waves, Land’s Wrath, Core Enforcer
  • Mega Stone Location: (Zygardite) Acquired during the Final Mission in Legends Z-A Main Story
  • BST: 216/100/121/91/95/85
  • BST (Mega): 216/70/91/216/85/100

Zygarde is the Cover Legendary for Pokemon Legends Z-A, and one of the strongest Pokemon in the series. Regardless of its lack of utility for the End-Game and PvP (since it’s banned), there’s no denying this is the strongest Dragon-type Pokemon in the game.

Zygarde 50% Forme

Even at its 10% Forme, Zygarde is a force to be reckoned with, and when it reaches 100%, it literally becomes a giant mecha/kaiju. The power of Zygarde is further enhanced by Mega Evolution, which unlocks its full potential and turns its 700+ stats into nearly 800, making it one of the strongest Pokemon ever (Yes, stronger than Arceus). Since most of its signature moves are Physical, it is highly recommended to build it with EVs that reflect that aptitude, even though its strongest attack (Core Enforcer) is a Special Attack.

To get Zygarde in Pokemon Legends Z-A, players need to finish the Main Story, and then start the After-Story Quest ‘Infinite A-Z Royale.’ After winning 5 rounds, they should be approached by Lysandre, who will tell them about The One Who Gives, and The One Who Takes. Completing these two quests and beating Lysandre in battle will unlock the possibility to face Zygarde in Wild Zone 20. Beating it in single combat will allow players to catch this Legendary Pokemon.

Garchomp

The Best Dragon-type For PvP & PvE

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 4 Sp. Def
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Fire Fang, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush
  • Mega Stone Location: (Garchompite) Bought in the Sone Emporium for 70k.
  • BST: 108/130/95/80/85/102
  • BST (Mega): 108/170/115/120/95/92

Arguably, the best Dragon-type Pokemon for Pokemon Legends Z-A PvP, and also a decent team member for most of the Main Story as well. Mega Garchomp boasts one of the highest Physical attack values in the game, and can absolutely one-shot anything (except maybe Drampa).

Once this beast evolves into Mega Garchomp, it’s game over for whatever crosses in its path. Mega Garchomp loses the battle against a few opponents (Xerneass, Mega Clefable, Drampa), and can outspeed most Dragon-types, securing Priority STAB Damage and taking them down before they act.

To get Garchomp, players need to catch and train Gible, located in Wild Zone 8, but it’s a notoriously rare spawn, so players will struggle finding one at first. Once players have one for themselves, it will carry them throughout the Main Story like a breeze, and a well-trained Garchomp is truly a menace in Ranked Battles.

Mega Charizard X

Its Reign Of Terror Has Begun (Again)

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Sp. Atk/ 4 Sp. Def
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Dragon Claw, Flamethrower, Thunder Punch, Flare Blitz
  • Mega Stone Location: (Charizardite X) Purchased at the Stone Emporium for 100K.
  • BST: 78/84/78/109/85/100
  • BST (Mega): 78/130/111/130/85/100

One of the first Mega Evolutions that joined the Pokemon world, and a nightmare in competitions until Mega Evolutions ceased to be the gimmick in VGC. A Mega Evolved Charizard that enhances all its Physical Attacker attributes, and becomes a flying menace of the Fire/Dragon-types.

With the Flying-type removed, Mega Charizard X becomes less vulnerable to Electric-type Moves, and even though its stats are a bit far from the newest Mega Evolved Pseudo-Legendaries, it’s still a deadly opponent to face in ranked battles. Few Pokemon can survive a direct Assault from a Mega Evolved Charizard.

Players can get a Charmander early if they complete Side Mission 22. If not, they will have to wait until the Post-game to catch it in Wild Zone 20.

Salamence

A Fast Physical Attacker With Coverage

  • Best EV Spread: 252 Atk / 252 Speed/ 4 Def
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Flamethrower (or Dragon Rush), Air Slash, Dragon Claw, Outrage
  • Mega Stone Location: (Salamencite) Purchased at Quasartico Inc. for 360 Mega Shards.
  • BST: 95/135/80/110/80/100
  • BST (Mega): 95/145/130/120/90/120

With decent speed, coverage moves, and boasting one of the highest attack values, Salamence and Mega Salamence occupy a privileged position among the strongest Dragon-types. Salamence works best as a pure Physical attacker, so build it with that in mind.

The new meta forces players into Melee, though having Flamethrower instead of Dragon Rush can help players fill the distance gap, and anticipate to Ice-type Attacker, like Mega Froslass. Still, two out of three times, Mega Salamence will outspeed its rivals, so players will be fine spamming Dragon Rush, Outrage/Dragon Claw combo.

Players can find and catch Bagon, which evolves into Shelgon and then Salamence, or directly capture an Alpha Salamence in Wild Zone 15.

Dragonite

A Power Up For One Of The Most Broken Pokemon

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 4 HP
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Thunder Punch, Extremespeed, Dragon Claw (or Fire Punch), Outrage
  • Mega Stone Location: (Dragoninite) Defeat Rogue Mega Dragonite.
  • BST: 91/134/95/100/100/80
  • BST (Mega): 91/124/115/145/125/100

Dragonite was already too powerful for its own good, so it needed a nerf, not a buff. The devs knew this, so they gave it the worst possible BST boost when it becomes Mega Dragonite, losing Physical Attack Power and gaining Sp. Attack. Though it also gains Defense, Sp. Def, and Speed, so it’s not all that bad.

Pure Physical builds are still okay for Dragonite, with Fire Punch or Thunder Punch for coverage, then Extremespeed as a gap closer (the new Meta demands it) and Outrage to wipe anything on its path. If players want to try their luck with a SpA build, they should change its nature to Modest instead of Adamant, and pick Hyper Beam, Draco Meteor, Ice Beam, and Focus Blast (to counter Drampa).

Players can get themselves a Dratini Early on in the rooftop of Restaurant Le Nah, located in the southeastern side of Lumiose, near Vert Sector 6.

Drampa

Surprisingly Good For Its Low Stats

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Sp.Atk/ 4 Def
  • Best Nature: Modest (Sp. Attack ↑ – Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Draco Meteor, Hyper Beam,
  • Mega Stone Location: (Drampanite) Purchased for 360 Mega Shards at Quasartico Inc.
  • BST: 78/60/85/135/91/36
  • BST (Mega): 78/85/110/160/116/36

Drampa might not be a Pseudo Legendary, and even with its Mega Evolution its BST doesn’t pass the threshold needed to become one, however don’t throw it under the rug just yet. Drampa’s most notorious stat after Mega Evolving is its Special Attack, turning this Normal/Dragon-type into a Glass Cannon.

Drampa

With its speed being so low, it becomes really hard to dodge moves at close range, so Drampa is always a third or second pick, and one used away from the center field (where Physical attackers do their thing), so avoid joining the fray and shoot that Draco Meteor/Hyper Beam combo from afar.

Players can catch Drampa in the Wild Zone 19 which becomes available after completing the Main Mission 30: The only way to catch an Alpha Drampa is by constantly making it respawn, so players might need to try more than once before getting the perfect specimen.
