Battlefield 6 Player Count is Down 65% From Its Peak
The Battlefield 6 player count is down roughly 65% from its all-time peak. Battlefield 6 launched last month to a great deal of fanfare. The new FPS from EA earned strong reviews from critics and was an immediate commercial success, estimated to have raked in $100 million from Steam alone at the time of its release. It sold 7 million units in just a few days, and while we don’t have updated sales numbers, it’s safe to assume that it’s still going strong and will comfortably be named one of the top-selling games of the year.
There are big plans to support Battlefield 6 for the long-term, with Season 1 well underway at the time of this writing. The next big Battlefield 6 update is primed for November 18, and yet another is on deck for December 9. As a live-service game with frequent updates, Battlefield 6‘s player count is expected to fluctuate over time. With that in mind, some fans may still be surprised to learn how much the player count has dropped from its peak last month.
While there are exceptions to the rule, many games enjoy their peak player count on the weekend of their launch, with the numbers gradually declining over time and spiking back up when there are big updates. Battlefield 6, despite its explosive popularity, is not immune to this phenomenon. According to Steam Charts, the Battlefield 6 peak concurrent player count is 747,440. The latest 24-hour peak concurrent player count of the game 257,862, which is down about 65% from the all-time peak. Now, 257,862 is still an incredibly impressive number and Battlefield 6 is still in the top 5 most-played games on the platform, but it’s interesting to compare the numbers. It will also be interesting to see if the downward trend continues month-to-month or if the game is able to hold on to its current playerbase.
Battlefield 6 is Facing Tough Competition
Beyond the fact that games naturally lose players after launch, there could be a couple of additional explanations that could explain why the Battlefield 6 player count has dropped by hundreds of thousands of players. The biggest factor is likely competition. Extraction shooter ARC Raiders has blown up on Steam and is becoming a viral phenomenon. ARC Raiders currently has more players than BF6 on Steam, and it’s highly likely that some players jumped ship. A more recent factor could be the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. While Call of Duty is nowhere near as popular on Steam as Battlefield, the former is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate/PC Game Pass, and it wouldn’t be surprising if some BF6 players are at least taking a break to check out Black Ops 7 this weekend.
Battlefield 6 has also faced criticism for its live-service approach and not having maps big enough to satisfy hardcore fans of the franchise. These fans have voiced their concerns online, and negative word of mouth can certainly have an impact on a game’s player count. Increased competition from new game releases is likely the bigger factor, but it’s still something worth consideration.
Steam Isn’t the Whole Story
It’s worth pointing out that Steam isn’t the full picture when it comes to the Battlefield 6 player count. It’s entirely possible Battlefield 6‘s player count is more stable on PlayStation and Xbox, but we don’t have the exact numbers to know for sure. Regardless, even though the player count is down compared to the peak, Battlefield 6 is still one of the year’s biggest success stories and will likely remain a fixture of many fans’ gaming rotations for years to come — assuming EA is able to deliver compelling new content on a regular basis, that is.
