Red Dead Redemption Announced for Current Gen Platforms
Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare standalone expansion will be coming to all major current-gen consoles in December, in addition to their upcoming launch on mobile devices. Red Dead Redemption is already in the top five of Rockstar’s best-selling games, beating out greats like Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and this new announcement opens them up to a new generation of gamers.
As of August, the original Red Dead Redemption had sold more than 17.5 million copies since its initial 2010 launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The western action-adventure game has seen multiple ports in the past few years, hitting PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2023 and PC in 2024. Most recently, Red Dead Redemption became a big hit on Steam when it launched on the platform in late October 2024, where it enjoys a 91 percent player approval rating.
Red Dead Redemption PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date
Now, Rockstar Games has announced via its Twitter account that Red Dead Redemption will become available for the first time on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 2, through a collaboration with Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games. The announcement came just hours after news broke that the ESRB had officially rated versions of Red Dead Redemption for these three specific consoles, suggesting that the game would likely be arriving on them eventually. According to Rockstar’s official website, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game will feature enhanced image quality, HDR support, and resolutions up to 4K, running at 60 FPS. Likewise, the Switch 2 version will also run at 60 FPS and will support DLSS, HDR, and the hybrid console’s unique mouse controls.
What’s more, fans who have already purchased Red Dead Redemption on most previous platforms will be able to get an upgraded version on their current-gen consoles for free. Rockstar’s announcement states that anyone who already owns the PS4, Nintendo Switch, or backwards-compatible Xbox One copies of the game will receive the upgrade at no cost, and previous PS4 and Nintendo Switch save files will continue to work on the upgraded versions. Players are also in for one of the best DLC expansions in video gaming, as Undead Nightmare will enjoy the same upgrades as the base game.
The news also came out just a couple of hours after Netflix announced Red Dead Redemption was coming to its streaming games service. Along with the game’s upcoming launch on iOS and Android devices, players are about to have plenty of new ways to dive into the classic western shooter, and many Rockstar fans responding to the announcement have expressed hope that Red Dead Redemption 2 will get the same treatment soon.
