ARC Raiders Update 1.2.0 Hit One Target Too Hard
ARC Raiders‘ North Line Update 1.2.0 is an exciting new chapter for the breakout hit extraction shooter. With this latest update, ARC Raiders players now get to face new ARC enemies, access new weapons, and start contributing to the Breaking New Ground community event to unlock the Stella Montis map. Unfortunately, not all the changes in this update are positive, as one of ARC Raiders‘ best skills was nerfed far harder than it needed to be.
As a PvPvE extraction shooter, the formula for ARC Raiders is one part loot and one part combat. Players can choose where they want to prioritize their skill investments around this gameplay loop from within ARC Raiders‘ three skill trees: Conditioning, Mobility, and Survival. One of the best skills for ARC Raiders players to invest in if they want to maximize the loot they earn comes in the form of the Survival tree’s Security Breach skill, which is the subject of 1.2.0’s most controversial change.
ARC Raiders’ Nerf to Security Breach Makes it Virtually Unusable
Security Breach serves as one of the two final nodes of ARC Raiders‘ Survival skill tree, and it can be the perfect capstone for builds aimed at earning rare loot from topside runs.
- Security Breach: Lets you breach Security Lockers.
Although the Security Breach skill itself remains the same, the value of the loot that can now spawn in Security Lockers has decreased significantly. Previously, Security Lockers were notorious for containing rare loot like:
- Epic (purple) weapons
- Blueprints
- Wolfpack Grenades
- Complex Gun Parts
While these Security Lockers typically contained a mix of Rare and Common Quality materials as well, players were very likely to find multiple Epic Quality items as well. However, after ARC Raiders‘ update 1.2.0, Security Lockers seem to contain these Epic Quality goods far less often, making the lockers a lot less appealing than other containers that can be found in high-value areas around ARC Raiders‘ maps.
Security Breach Already Was Challenging Enough to Use as it Was
That most disappointing aspect of this nerf is that it was largely unnecessary, since Security Breach was already difficult enough to access prior to the patch. As a capstone node of the Survival skill tree, unlocking Security Breach requires players to invest 37 skill points into the tree, which means they need to reach level 37 at a minimum in order to unlock it. On its own, that feat is enough to reward a hefty loot payout, but players also have to successfully find a Security Locker and extract with its contents in order to obtain this rare loot, creating a tough one-two punch of a challenge that should serve to reward ARC Raiders players who play smartly.
ARC Raiders Players Who Missed Out on the Original Security Breach Skill Now Have a Disadvantage
By nerfing the loot that can drop from Security Lockers, ARC Raiders has now created a split between players who had access to the skill before the patch and those still working towards unlocking it after the North Line update. Players who took advantage of Security Breach prior to 1.2.0 and found useful loot like Epic materials needed to upgrade their workbenches and could stock up on powerful guns now have an advantage over players who have to deal with lower-quality drops from Security Lockers in the wake of this nerf.
Finding valuable blueprints early on, thanks to the Security Breach skill, can set ARC Raiders players up for success down the line. Now, any player not fortunate enough to take advantage of Security Breach before the nerf has a greater mountain to climb without the availability of rare loot from Security Lockers as a reward for the time and investment of leveling up their Survival tree. For the sake of creating a more even playing field, Security Lockers should have remained unchanged, even if it meant players could continue to farm rare loot from them.
