Steam’s ‘Brutal’ Soulslike Is Back With a Sequel, And It Already Has Overwhelmingly Positive Reviews
The sequel to Black Souls, a game known for its brutal story and Soulslike gameplay, is out on Steam, and it has already earned an Overwhelmingly Positive user review score. Steam is home to hundreds, if not thousands, of Dark Souls-inspired games, but few have been as edgy or as transgressive as the Black Souls series.
Back in August 2025, developer Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe? released the first Black Souls game on Steam, which quickly became a hit among Soulslike and RPG Maker fans. Many content creators described it as “the most disgusting JRPG” due to its unprecedented depiction of violence and graphic content that was certainly not suitable for players of all ages. Now, doubling down on the first game’s edgy story, the developer has released a sequel within the same year, this time with even more gruesome content for fans to explore.

Black Souls 2 Is an Even Edgier Soulslike, But Fans Seem to Love It
Published by Otaku Plan on November 28, Black Souls 2 has 98% positive reviews on Steam as of this writing. Compared to the previous title, Black Souls 2 offers a much wider character roster with 45 heroines inspired by famous fairytales like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, along with a broader selection of RPG classes, including Cleric, Warrior, Templar, Hunter, Explorer, and Fluffy. The 14-dollar game also features several different endings, making it a tiny game with surprisingly high replay value. One of the most curious features in Black Souls 2 is the ability to kill every NPC, which is tied to the player’s sanity and can trigger eerie hidden cutscenes and interactions.
Some of the New Features in Black Souls 2
- 45 heroines, up from 21 in the previous game
- 6 new classes, 9 in total
- New storyline
Many of the positive reviews for Black Souls 2 highlight how it blends explicit, violent content with a relatable story and deep characters. One Steam user wrote, “The depth of the game, the story, the mechanics, the decisions and consequences, the high replay value. I would never expect this kind of quality from a game built on a 14-year-old engine.” Another user added, “Like the first one, Black Souls 2 is a game I find extremely difficult to put down. The excitement of discovering what comes next and strategizing how to win most fights keeps me engaged.”
It is worth noting that, like the previous game, Black Souls 2 is an open-world game that explores mature themes and contains sexual content, making it unsuitable for younger audiences. As a result, the Steam version is heavily censored. Players who want to experience the full, explicit version can download an extra patch from the publisher Otaku Plan’s website. The update unlocks all quests and allows more interaction with NPCs, many of which involve violent or NSFW actions. These ferocious interactions help players better understand the story and uncover some of its secrets, but they are optional. Those who prefer to limit graphic content can turn it off in the settings.
Players interested in Black Souls 2 may want to act quickly, as the game is currently 10% off to celebrate its release. The promotion runs until December 12, after which the price will return to the regular $14. Fans of dark fantasy open-world games like the Black Souls series might also enjoy the free-to-play At Home Alone Final, which has Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam and features similar psychological horror elements. Those drawn to Black Souls‘ explicit content may prefer horror RPG Maker games such as Fear & Hunger, The Last Sovereign, and Demons Roots. However, fans should note that some of these titles may not be available in certain regions due to Steam’s new regulations on explicit games.
