Time Stranger Player Count is Down 94.5%
Digimon Story: Time Stranger‘s player count is down by 94.5% compared to its peak last month. Digimon Story: Time Stranger released last month to a great deal of success, quickly becoming one of the most commercially successful Digimon games while simultaneously earning one of the franchise’s highest review aggregate scores.
Overall, Digimon Story: Time Stranger earned mostly positive reviews from professional critics, securing it an 80 overall rating on review aggregate site OpenCritic and a respectable 78 on Metacritic. User review scores for Digimon Story: Time Stranger have been significantly more positive than the critic assessments. The game currently has a 100% rating from OpenCritic user scores and a 9.2 from Metacritic user scores. This makes Digimon Story: Time Stranger the second-highest rated game of the year based on user score, just behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and its 9.6 rating.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Needs to Strike While the Iron is Hot
The release window for Digimon Story: Time Stranger is currently unknown, but it should aim to avoid some heavy hitters in its genre space.
Clearly, Digimon and RPG enthusiasts in general love Digimon Story: Time Stranger. Considering the splash the game made last month, one may be surprised to learn just how dramatically its player count has dropped. Digimon Story: Time Stranger enjoyed a peak concurrent player count of 84,458 on Steam, but in the last 24-hours, its peak only hit 4,625 concurrent players. This constitutes a massive drop of 94.5% since launch last month. The player count was slightly higher last Sunday with about 3,000 more concurrent players, but that’s still a steep drop of about 91%.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Player Count
Before Digimon fans get too concerned about Time Stranger‘s massive player count drop, it’s worth pointing out that it is not a live-service game. The only time consistent concurrent player counts really matter all that much is with live-service titles or games with an online multiplayer focus that need a consistent playerbase to justify keeping the servers on. Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a single-player JRPG. Its player count could drop to zero, and it wouldn’t really matter because the game is already a success. That being said, it is still surprising to see how big of a drop there was because there was so much buzz surrounding Digimon Story: Time Stranger at the time of its release, and it is a pretty meaty experience, especially for those going for 100% completion.
While Time Stranger has enjoyed a largely positive reception from fans and critics, the game is not without controversy, and it’s possible that has played a small role in the player count drop. For the uninitiated, Time Stranger sells Outer Dungeon DLC that significantly reduces the grind, giving players EXP, Gold, and Materials that they otherwise have to work a lot harder for if they only own the base game. In contrast to the positive reception to the base game, this DLC has a “Mostly Negative” review rating on Steam.
The Time Stranger Season Pass reviews aren’t much better, with a “Mixed” rating on the platform, indicating that some fans may not come back when the new content is out. For the uninitiated, $29.99 gets you the Golden Moai farm item along with eventual access to three Episode Packs that include new Digivolutions and Digimon. It seems many fans aren’t interested in this and are not happy with how Time Stranger has handled DLC in general, potentially hurting its potential for longevity.
Steam Isn’t the Whole Story When It Comes to the Time Stranger Player Count
The Time Stranger player count drop is interesting, but it’s not the whole story. It’s entirely possible that Time Stranger has had a larger and steadier player count on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, though we don’t have any exact numbers to know either way. It would also be interesting to know the concurrent player count numbers for Time Stranger competitor Pokemon Legends: Z-A and compare the two, but Nintendo doesn’t share that information. We know that Legends: Z-A outsold Time Stranger, but considering the behemoth that is the Pokemon franchise, that’s really no surprise.
