How to Join Nine Mortal Ways Sect in Where Winds Meet
Joining the Nine Mortal Ways is somewhat different compared to other Sects in Where Winds Meet. Unlike regular Sects in WWM, these scoundrels deal in treachery, disguises, and trickery, and the only way to join them is to exemplify their values yourself.
Instead of a straightforward recruitment method, the only way to join them is to deceive others or to be deceived by them. This guide covers all ways to gain entry into the Nine Mortal Ways Sect as well as how to leave them if needed.

How to Join Nine Mortal Ways Sect in Where Winds Meet
There are two known methods of joining the Nine Mortal Ways Sect in Where Winds Meet.
Members of the Nine Mortal Ways are masters of disguise and have infiltrated the recruitment missions for other Sects. In order to join them, players have to find these members and go along with their schemes.
During the Mortal Rope Dart Skill Theft mission in the Martial Hall in Kaifeng, Elder Ni mentions that he will be willing to recruit you into the Sect in the Ghostlight Market. At the time of writing, we have not been able to find any traces of a quest that would let players join the Nine Mortal Ways by meeting Elder Ni in the Ghostlight Market. It is unclear whether this was simply flavor text or a feature that is going to be implemented in a future update.
Well of Heaven Questline
- Find the waiter named San Qian in Harvestfall Village and ask him about recruiters for the Well of Heaven Sect.
- Pay him for the information using 200 Coins.
- Follow the quest marker to find the Well of Heaven Elder under the big elm tree.
- Initiate a conversation and select the option to pay the Elder 999 Coins.
- Follow the quest marker to reach the Elder’s “friend” Zhang Yihao, standing by a chest on the mountain nearby.
- Use Celestial Seize to steal the Large Pile of Jewelry from him.
- Go back to the Well of Heaven Elder and hand him the item.
- Select “Fine, I’ll go with the flow” when he reveals he is a part of the Nine Mortal Ways and is willing to recruit you.
If you say “Not happy! I quit!” instead, he will become hostile and start attacking you. Do this if you want to be recruited into the Well of Heaven instead of the Nine Mortal Ways. Note that if you end up killing him, this route to join the Nine Mortal Ways will become permanently locked.
Midnight Blades Questline
- Head to Halo Peak in the northern part of Qinghe (Sundara Land).
- Locate the Seriously Injured Swordsman on the rocky outcropping.
- Follow the trail of blood to find Icchantika, the Ferryman of the Midnight Blades.
- Select the “My heart is of the Asura Heart” when talking to him.
- Icchantika will give you a token and will tell you to go kill someone to “bloody” it.
- Talk to Icchantika again and give him the “Rouge Token.”
- You’ll receive a note from the “Midnight Bladez Chief Elder” asking you to send him some money.
- Follow the quest marker to meet the Midnight Bladez at the rendezvous point.
- Choose the option “Present the letter from the Sect,” and “Accept the welcome gift” to join the Nine Mortal Ways Sect.
Rouge Token can be purchased from the Honest Merchant in Harvestfall Village.
How to Join Nine Mortal Ways Sect After Rejecting Them
Even if you reject the Nine Mortal Ways recruiters during the Well of Heaven and Midnight Blades questlines, you will not be locked out of joining the Nine Mortal Ways Sect. This is because Icchantika, the Ferryman of the Midnight Blades, can always be found at Halo Peak no matter what.
To join up, all you need to do is give Icchantika a Rouge Token. As long as you are not a part of another Sect, you will be able to use this route to enter the Nine Mortal Ways Sect without any hiccups.

You can choose one of four starting weapons in Where Winds Meet, and they all have very different roles and movesets.
How to Leave Nine Mortal Ways Sect in Where Winds Meet
The Nine Mortal Ways Sect is somewhat special in this regard. Unlike leaving other Sects in Where Winds Meet, which demand a Severance Trial to sever ties, leaving the Nine Mortal Ways Sect requires that you pay Elder Ni 50,000 Coins instead. Here’s what you need to do:
- Open Sects from the start menu.
- Select “Betray Master” from the bottom right corner.
- You will be given the quest “Find the Elder to leave the Nine Mortal Ways.”
- Elder Ni Laoshan can be found west of Harvestfall Village, standing next to a wooden house.
- Head to the location marked on the map above to find his exact location. Talk to Elder Ni and give him 50,000 Coins to leave the Sect.
Elder Ni Laoshan only appears at this location during this specific quest. Otherwise, he can be found in the backyard of the Nine Mortal Ways Martial Hall in Kaifeng City (Rope Dart Skill Theft mission).
