Hogwarts Legacy May Be Getting a Single-Player Sequel After All
Speculation surrounding the potential direction of a Hogwarts Legacy sequel continues to lead in new directions, with a recent string of job listings for Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software, the studios behind the hit Harry Potter game, revealing that a new “high-quality single-player Action-Adventure RPG” is in the works. Related job postings directly connected to the Harry Potter franchise and animation requirements focusing on “creature” design seem to indicate that hiring may be ramping up for a major new project that just might become a Hogwarts Legacy sequel.
Prior job listings for Warner Bros. and Avalanche seemed to hint that Hogwarts Legacy 2 might be an MMORPG. Multiple career postings requested experience with live service game models and progression-reward systems while also requesting familiarity with “an established fantasy IP” that spanned books and movies. Though Hogwarts Legacy and Harry Potter were never directly named, repeated references to hallmarks of the game and franchise, combined with the undeniable critical and commercial success of the first Hogwarts Legacy title, were cause for many to begin connecting the apparent dots. However, a new set of job listings could now indicate a completely new set of speculation for Hogwarts Legacy 2.
Rumor: Online Multiplayer Harry Potter Game May Be in Development
A new rumor indicates that Hogwarts Legacy’s Avalanche Software could be developing an online multiplayer game based on the Harry Potter world.
Will Hogwarts Legacy 2 Be Single-Player?
A job posting by Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software seeks an Executive Producer to lead a “high-quality single-player Action-Adventure RPG,” with preferred candidates having “a passion for the source material and IP” the game will be based within. Another listing that went up the same day looks to fill a role for Brand Management & Product Marketing specifically for “assigned PC/console titles within the Harry Potter universe,” and a third career post wants an Animator with experience in designing “creatures” and a knowledge of “human and animal anatomy.” It just so happens that these requirments mirror those of older job listings for the original Hogwarts Legacy, with some curious overlap between more recent posts that led many to believe Hogwarts Legacy 2 could be free-to-play.
With these new listings now highlighting the potential for a highly-requested single-player sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, as opposed to the mixed-reaction possibility of an online multiplayer follow-up, the speculation turns to whether Warner Bros. and Avalanche could be working on multiple new Harry Potter games. If so, players who wanted more multiplayer features in the first Hogwarts Legacy would get what they have been asking for, while fans who appreciated a story-driven single-player experience could also have a fresh title to look forward to. Obviously, there is always the possibility that these job listings are unrelated to each other, or, much to the chagrin of fans, perhaps they are connected but to a different fantasy IP.
That said, Warner Bros. has made it clear that they want to continue investing in the Wizarding World IP. Between the upcoming HBO TV show adaptation of Harry Potter and the recently opened Ministry of Magic land at the Universal Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida, WB is clearly showing no signs of letting off the gas with the world of the boy wizard. Whether the confirmed Avalanche Software online multiplayer RPG or the newly revealed single-player action-adventure RPG end up being Hogwarts Legacy sequels remains to be seen, but the continued job listings do seem to indicate some big IP projects are brewing at Warner Bros. Games.
Considering Hogwarts Legacy was one of the best-selling games of 2023, many would be more surprised for WB to pass on a sequel rather than being shocked at multiple new titles under the Harry Potter branding possibly coming down the pipeline. The only other major IP under the Warner Bros. catalog that fits the same fantasy-story-that-spans-literature-and-film criteria would be The Lord of the Rings, but it would serve to reason that the company would prioritize a follow-up to Hogwarts Legacy before venturing into another magical realm for gaming.
