Vital Essences are an extremely rare type of consumable in Monster Hunter Stories 3. Players will very rarely find some while exploring monster dens, though some can also be obtained by completing side quests. There’s going to be plenty of luck involved if you want to pursue the former, and as for the latter, you’re eventually going to run out of quests to do. Farming dens in MH Stories 3 is likely the most reliable way to get Vital Essences, and you’ll want to know how you can make the most efficient use of your time while doing so.

Where to Get Vital Essences in Monster Hunter Stories 3
Monster dens have a chance to contain chests that have Vital Essences inside them, but instances like these are extremely rare for two reasons:
- You need to find monster dens that have abundant gathering points.
- The chest inside that rare monster den variant needs to actually contain Vital Essences.
Any monster den in MHS3 has a chance to have more gathering points than usual. You’ll know that this is the case when Rudy tells you that you have a lot to gain from the den apart from just monster eggs. When Rudy does tip you off, look around for a chest and open it. These chests can yield either Vital Essences or Surrogate Gems.
The best way to farm Vital Essences in MHS3 is to eat Vegetable Dishes before heading out. Eating veggies will increase the amount of materials you get from gathering points. Rare Dens seem to have a higher chance of having additional gathering points, so try to go for those first.
Don’t disregard Surrogate Gems. They may not restore Hearts, but they can prevent you from losing any with their ability to negate incoming damage.

You can view all available side quests (even the ones you haven’t started yet) by going to the Quests tab in the Pause menu. From here, you can also preview all the rewards you can get from them. Keep in mind that not every side quest in a region will be available right from the get-go, and you’ll may need to progress through the main story before they appear in the world and in the Quests tab.
Each of the quests listed above will give you one Vital Essence, and since you can’t repeat quests to get the same rewards, you can’t rely on these if you want a steady stream of essences. Thankfully, side quests in MHS3 usually don’t take long to complete, so if you need a Vital Essence but don’t feel like running around and searching dens, completing one or two of these quests should be enough to get you through your next encounter.
