What Makes Jolteon Good?
Jolteon is the best Eeveelution in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, thanks to its incredible Speed and Special Attack stats that make it the strongest non-Legendary Electric-type Pokemon in the game, period. Due to its stat spread, Jolteon functions like a glass cannon, hitting hard and hitting fast, with the ability to OHKO (One-Hit Knockout) Pokemon when given half a chance.
The traditional turn-based battle format in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen heavily rewards fast sweepers that can defeat entire teams without giving the opponent a chance to get off even a single move. Jolteon’s 130 Speed means it is almost always the fastest Pokemon on the field, and its 110 Sp. Atk ensures it has the ability to capitalize on that Speed at every given opportunity.
When Should You Evolve Eevee into Vaporeon?
Vaporeon is a bulky Water-type Pokemon that has the ability to take on a lot more punishment compared to the other Eeveelutions because of its high HP (130), and decent Sp. Def (95). Vaporeon also has a respectable Sp. Atk (110), which gives it the ability to hit quite hard when given the opportunity.
The only reason Vaporeon falls behind Jolteon in FireRed and LeafGreen is because of its Speed (65), which means it almost always goes second in the turn-based format. In the competitive scene, this is not really a major problem, but in a regular playthrough where you have to go through dozens of battles before getting a chance to recover at a Pokemon Center, it becomes a huge problem. Why is Flareon Bad in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?
In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, all Fire-type moves scale off of a Pokemon’s Sp. Atk stat. This puts Flareon, a Pokemon with really high Attack (130), and only passable Sp. Atk (95), in a very awkward position. Its best stat is unusable for any STAB attacks, which means a significant portion of its stats are wasted.
In addition, Flareon is also as slow as Vaporeon (65 Speed), but does not have the bulk of its Water-type counterpart to mitigate that weakness. In later Pokemon games, Flareon can translate its high Attack stat through Physical Fire-type moves like Flame Wheel, Fire Fang, and Flare Blitz, but in FireRed and LeafGreen, that is impossible.
How to Get Jolteon in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
To get Jolteon, first claim the free Eevee from the Celadon Mansion’s top floor in Celadon City. Then, buy a Thunder Stone from the Celadon Department Store for 2,100 Poke Dollars, or find the free Thunder Stones from the Power Plant (where you find Zapdos).
Once you’ve found a Thunder Stone, you can use it on your Eevee to evolve it into Jolteon instantly.
If you’re looking to add more than one Eeveelution to your party in FireRed and LeafGreen, you can breed Eevee or one of its Eeveelution with a Ditto at the Day Care on Four Island (Sevii Islands) after beating the Elite Four to get more Eevee eggs.

It’s important to wait to level up your Eevee to level 30 before evolving it into Jolteon because of one move: Bite. Jolteon does not learn Bite naturally, but Eevee does (at level 30). As a Dark-type move, Bite scales off of Sp. Atk in FireRed and LeafGreen. There are no non-Electric Special moves Jolteon can learn other than Bite, so this provides it with some much needed coverage.
