Venusaur

  • Most Useful Against: Brock, Misty, Giovanni, Lorelei

Bulbasaur is by far the best starter in FireRed and LeafGreen to make the early game a breeze. Brock and Misty are both weak to Grass-type moves, which means as soon as your Bulbasaur learns Vine Whip, it can solo both gyms very easily. Lt. Surge in Vermilion City is also not a problem for Bulbasaur, as it does neutral damage to all his Pokemon.

Dugtrio

  • Most Useful Against: Lt. Surge, Blaine

In Diglett’s Cave east of Vermilion City, you can run into a Level 31 Dugtrio if you search long enough. If you manage to catch it, you can take it straight to the Vermilion City Gym for an easy sweep. Similarly, Blaine in Cinnabar Gym is also extremely weak to Dugtrio’s Ground-type moves, turning the Gym into a joke.

The best part about Dugtrio is that you do not have to train the Pokemon at all if you catch it at the right time, which means you don’t have to engage in the most tedious task in FRLG for this Pokemon: leveling.

Vaporeon

  • Most Useful Against: Blaine, Giovanni, Lance

In Celadon City, you can get an Eevee for free from the building west of the Pokemon Center by going through the back entrance. This Eevee can evolve into Vaporeon by using a Water Stone, which can be bought from the Celadon Department Store for 2,100 Poke Dollars.

Vaporeon serves as the dedicated tank to the team, using its incredible bulk and great defensive typing to weather storms that would OHKO weaker Pokemon. Water-types are also very powerful against Blaine and Giovanni, both of whom can be defeated with a Vaporeon that knows Surf. Similarly, Vaporeon can also be taught Ice Beam, which hard counters all of Lance’s team and gives Vaporeon an easy way to deal with Flying-type Pokemon as well.

Alakazam

  • Most Useful Against: Erika, Koga, Agatha

Psychic-types are extremely strong in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, and there are no Psychic-types stronger than Alakazam in the entire game. An absolute monster of a Pokemon, Alakazam is the definition of a special sweeper.

The only problem with Alakazam is that it is very weak defensively, though this can be mitigated with the aid of other Pokemon in the team as long as you play smart.

If you do not have access to trade evolutions in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, and cannot get Alakazam, Arcanine/Ninetales are both excellent options here as well, as they provide easy answers to Erika and Fire-type coverage that is missing from the team.

Dragonite

  • Most Useful Against: Lance, Bruno, Blue

If you manage to catch a Dratini in the Safari Zone, adding a Dragonite to the team is a no-brainer. Not only does this Pokemon have pseudo-legendary stats, but very few Pokemon in the game resist Dragon-type moves, ensuring that Dragonite almost always hits for Neutral damage to any Pokemon that stands in its way.

Dragonite also gets access to Flying-type moves that hard counter Bruno and any other Fighting or Grass-type you come across in your journey. Additionally, as long as your Dragonite is faster than Lance’s Pokemon, it will OHKO his entire team without giving him a chance to retaliate, turning the Elite Four run into a breeze.

Zapdos

  • Most Useful Against: Sabrina, Lorelei, Lance

Zapdos can be found in the Power Plant, south of the Route 10 Pokemon Center, which you can reach after you get the ability to use HM03 Surf outside of battle. As one of the legendary birds of Kanto, Zapdos naturally has excellent stats and strong moves.

The best part about Zapdos is that you can catch it very early on in the game, allowing you to naturally add it to your team composition without having to go out of your way to level it up.
